Tala's spirit takes the form of an illuminated manta ray, and guides Moana to the open ocean, beginning the journey.

The heart had originally been given to Moana's father. But when he failed to make it past the reef, and his friend drowned, he threw it back into the ocean. When it appeared to Moana as a baby her grandmother was there to see it.
Sina is last seen after Moana returns home from her successful mission. Sina warmly embraces her daughter, and the family is reunited once more. Due to Moana's bravery, the villagers are free to voyage the open oceans once more, which Sina joins in.
Tala is reincarnated as a physical manta ray and swims alongside Moana's boat as their family celebrates the return to their roots, shortly before Maui returns, watching Moana and her people sail proudly.

Who is Moana's real dad?
Moana's father, Chief Tui, may have been chosen by the ocean before her to bring the Heart of Te Fiti to Maui, indicating a family history of protecting the world. Chief Tui recognizes the Heart of Te Fiti when Moana shows it to him, suggesting that he has seen it before and has a fear associated with it.

Although Moana is from the fictional island Motunui some 3,000 years ago, the story and culture of Moana is based on the very real heritage and history of Polynesian islands such as Hawaii, Samoa, Tonga, and Tahiti.
