Summary and Analysis Part 3: Chapter 22. The monkeys retreat into the jungle, leaving Peeta, Katniss, and Finnick alone with the dying tribute from District 6. The monkey's fangs have punctured her chest, and Katniss suspects her lungs or heart have been ruptured.
The squad gathers and heads down the tunnels, away from the hissing cries. The smell of Snow's roses forces Katniss to lead the team into the Transfer, an underground causeway for delivery vehicles. Messalla is killed by a pod, and the rest of the squad take fire from a group of Peacekeepers.

Katniss here's this and understands that even though she may not love Peeta (then) that it's one less person who has to die. (At least that's what I have always thought.) Katniss realizes that if she pretends to be in love with Peeta people will want the capitol to let them survive.

Katniss makes a fire to cook the meat she just hunted and also to draw Cato, their only remaining competitor, but he doesn't show. Peeta asks to stay in the cave again that night, and Katniss reluctantly relents, realizing that she hasn't been very nice to Peeta all day.

Peeta talks to her soothingly about the different colors he uses when he paints. This seems to comfort her and ease the dying woman's pain. The tribute uses her own blood to paint a small flower on Peeta's face, then she dies. Katniss bathes.
He is "broad-shouldered and strong." Part of Peeta's left leg was amputated following the 74th Hunger Games, forcing him to walk with the aid of a prosthetic leg for the rest of his life. In the 2012 film adaptation, his leg is never amputated.

It took time for Peeta to break out of that conditioning, and even when the possibility existed that Peeta could be a danger to Katniss, the two of them still elected to be together and build a future in a post-Hunger-Games world. Their love for one another is evident.
