After Prim is killed in an explosion in The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 2, Mrs.Everdeen moves to a hospital in District 4 as she can't bring herself to return to District 12 following her daughter's death. It seems District 4 is where she stayed, and she and Katniss kept in touch through the phone.
Mrs. Everdeen loved Mr. Everdeen very much, so much that she left her merchant life for the Seam. After he died, she fell into a deep depression and left her two young daughters to fend for themselves.
Katniss has a conflicted relationship with her mother. Following her father's death, her mother fell into deep depression and now rarely speaks. As a result, Katniss has a difficult time feeling love and affection for her mother, even as she recognizes that her mother is a kind and intelligent woman.
Katniss's Mom is a skilled healer, though she suffered from severe depression after Katniss's father died. For this, Katniss greatly resents her. Katniss's mother is not the survivor that her daughter is.
While Prim is caring for the wounded, a second set of bombs go off, killing her, along with everyone around her. This act of treachery and shameless targeting of the innocent is what finally turns President Snow's guards against him. They believe he is to blame, when in reality, Alma Coin was responsible.

What does Prim's death symbolize?
To put it short and simply, Prim's death is a message from Suzanne Collins telling us all that children can and do also die in war. In war, you can't protect even the most innocent and vulnerable because war and destruction don't discriminate.
Prim is the youngest of the Everdeen family; her sister is Katniss. Her father, Mr. Everdeen, died in a mine explosion four years before, leaving her mother, sister, and herself alone.
She was only 13 years old when she was killed in The Hunger Games: Mockingjay, and her youth only makes the tragedy that much harder for Katniss to bear after everything else she had suffered. Prim's death is a truly heartbreaking moment.
Later, Katniss learned that Mr. Mellark had once been in love with her mother but that the woman had chosen a boy from the Seam—Katniss' father—instead. This completely changed Katniss' perspective of Peeta's family. She realized that Mr.
His father pointed her out and told Peeta he had wanted to marry Katniss's mother, but she ran off with a coal miner who sang so well even the birds would stop and listen.

In the end, Katniss and Gale grew apart, as many childhood friends and young loves do. She needed something different in her life, and with Gale's link to Primrose's death, Katniss found a reason to cut ties. If Katniss ever wanted to find comfort again, she knew she had to return to Peeta for the long term.
During the interviews for the 75th Hunger Games, Peeta lied about Katniss being pregnant to try to protect her from the Games, and Katniss later stated that she miscarried due to an electric shock in the arena to avoid further questioning.
The only information the audience has about Katniss' future is that she and Peeta have a child together 15 years after their experiences in the Rebellion (at 33 years old) and that five years later, they have a second child.
Her love for Prim is so strong that she is willing to sacrifice herself for her sister, something that not many others in the district would do for their family members. Through flashback, Katniss reveals how she grew up as a survivor after her father's death and her mother's descent into depression.
However, after Mrs. Mellark reentered the bakery, Katniss witnessed her scolding and beating Peeta after he burnt two loaves of bread and telling him to feed them to the pigs just before disappearing to help a customer. She was not supportive of Peeta when his name was drawn to compete in the 74th Hunger Games.
Katniss here's this and understands that even though she may not love Peeta (then) that it's one less person who has to die. (At least that's what I have always thought.) Katniss realizes that if she pretends to be in love with Peeta people will want the capitol to let them survive.
Peeta tells Caesar that he and Katniss are already married. According to Peeta, the two married in secret and Katniss is now pregnant. The audience, who doesn't know Peeta is lying, can't bear the cruelty of their doomed fate as tributes in the Quell.
Prim hears Katniss and turns to see her running towards her. As Katniss gets nearer to the barricade, a second wave of bombs go off, sending Katniss hurtling through the air and killing many more children, including Prim. The last word from Prim in the novel before she died was "Katniss".
Before the Capitol battle, Gale had explained to Katniss his series of bombs designed to feed off human compassion: a small bomb would go off, and then when medical aid rushed in, a second bomb would go off, killing those people as well. Incidentally, it's this exact type of bomb that took Prim's life.
Katniss, meanwhile, is four years older and very protective of Prim, and so without hesitation she volunteers to take her sister's place. Moreover, she has years of experience hunting (and therefore killing) and is far less sensitive than her sister, making her more likely to survive the ordeal of the Games.
Prim is Katniss' younger sister who was selected in the reaping for the Seventy-fourth Hunger Games, but Katniss volunteered to serve as tribute instead. She works with her mother as a healer in District 12 to care for and cure the starving, sick, and wounded. Katniss is determined to protect Prim throughout the novel.
Gale Hawthorne is Katniss Everdeen's best friend and hunting partner. In order to not cast suspicion on Katniss and Peeta Mellark's highly publicized strategic romance, Gale is presented as Katniss's cousin. He bears a resemblance to Katniss, which makes their cover believable.
The Hunger Games series, much like Harry Potter is for young adults, and the themes and motivations are not hard to understand. Katniss NEVER hated Peeta. She figured she'd have to kill him to survive and had no desire to like him because of that.
