Rose begins experiencing hallucinations induced by the demon. Shortly after, she has trouble finding her cat, Mustache, and its tragic fate is revealed during her nephew's birthday party. The boy opens Rose's present to discover her cat's dead body.
She then takes her own life in front of Joel, effectively passing the curse on to him. The Smile ending closes as the camera focuses on Rose's death being reflected in Joel's terrified eye, showing that her fate will continue to happen to other people.
Why Rose Dies In Smile's Ending. Rose dies in Smile's ending because she was only able to overpower the entity once. She had enough fight in her to take on the gangly demonic monstrosity and even appeared to kill it, shattering a lantern over its head.
The ending of the film is particularly sad since it proves that as soon as Joel agrees to help Rose figure out what's happening, he isn't able to extract himself from her, and he will never break free. It's amazing to think that Joel makes the seemingly small decision to be there for Rose and this is what happens.
Smile clearly wants the audience to see the connection between Rose's curse and mental illness. Throughout the movie, characters use therapy buzzwords and often suggest that Rose's mental state is a result of her genetics and past trauma.
As Joel walks in, Rose is wearing that familiar creepy smile and has covered herself in gasoline – about to light a match. So no, Rose does not survive in Smile and even worse, it seems the curse has found a way to keep itself going, with Joel now presumably set to be its next victim.
What happened to Rose's father? The film's opening sequence pans across a series of portraits of Rose's family, with her mother, father, and her sister Holly all happy together. Then Rose's father disappears from the pictures. It's unclear whether he died or abandoned the family.
[Editor's note: The following contains spoilers for Smile.] The smile curse operates in a fairly consistent fashion throughout the film. One infected person is consumed, the entity forces them to take their own life and then the witness becomes cursed. But, what if multiple people witness that death?
The grief monster rips off its skin, revealing its horrible, true form, then snaps open Rose's mouth, crawling inside of her. Not only is Rose unable to defeat the demon in Smile's ending but, in a truly vicious twist, the entity waits until Joel arrives before possessing and killing her. This means that it will be able to live on in him since the curse needs a witness to pass itself on.
Smile 2, the sequel to the breakout horror film, has been confirmed by Paramount and is set to have a theatrical release. The release date for Smile 2 is October 18, 2024, approximately two years after the release of the original film.
Even though Rose did everything she was supposed to do — that we're supposed to do to process our own trauma — the monster still won. The cycle will continue. Smile writer-director Parker Finn characterizes the two endings of his film as an attempt to get ahead of audiences' expectations.
There's obviously a reason why the smile demon appears as a giant, looming depiction of Rose's Mom during the final act. One of the most unsettling moments in "Smile" takes place just before that when Rose's trusted therapist, Dr. Northcott (Robin Weigert) reveals herself to be the demon.
With a shard of a broken plant pot, the monster controlling Laura proceeds to cut open her neck open, killing herself in the process right in front of Rose, as her body falls still smiling. As the monster who haunted her is now haunting Rose.
While its MO was for Rose to harm herself, the demon was also capable of physically interacting with the real world, as shown by the twist of it impersonating Dr. Madeline and attacking Rose. Thus, the monster could have feasibly killed Rose's cat.
So, the entity uses Rose's body to pour gasoline all over the psychiatrist, lighting a match just as Joel comes through the door. Rose's body is smiling while she burns away, and we can see in Joel's eyes he will be scarred for life by that disturbing suicide.

One of the most heart-breaking casualties in Smile was Rose's cat, Mustache, but the film never revealed what actually happened to it. Smile follows Rose (Sosie Bacon), a doctor who gets cursed by an entity that presents itself through people with a sinister smile.

With the colors, we wanted to do something unusual. We had read this study that was from back in the sixties where they found out that this sort of Pepto Bismol pink color somehow was supposed to make violent inmates less violent. So my production designer, Lester Cohen, and I, really grabbed onto that.
