This seems strange because after one of the Lakota warriors lethally wounds Elsa (Isabel May) with an arrow, Elsa then informs the warriors that the people of the caravan aren't the horse thieves that the Lakota were looking for.
1883 ends not unlike it begins, with Elsa Dutton (Isabel May) getting shot by a band of Lakota warriors while defending the wagon train. Unfortunately, Elsa's wounds are fatal, and though she's been the consistent narrator of this series, we soon realize that she may actually be narrating from the great beyond.
Though the settlers had nothing to do with the massacre, 1883's Lakota chief (Tokala Black Elk) logically assumed that they were responsible for the slaughter. The misunderstanding resulted in most of the caravan getting brutally attacked and Elsa taking a poisoned arrow to the liver.
She later met a Comanche warrior in Kansas named Sam who she connected with, giving her a second chance at love. She later agreed to accept Sam's hand in marriage, but there was no ceremony.
A fighter through and through, Elsa does not stop her efforts when she is approached by the Lakota leader. As she screams out in Comanche, he stops and says in English, “Warriors know those words.” Even though she's wounded, Elsa responds: “My husband taught me. He's Comanche.
In Comancheria, the settlers pay a tax to the Comanche to cross their land. One of the Comanche introduces himself to Elsa as Sam, a name he took from the man who killed his wife. The two race their horses; Elsa wins and Sam nicknames her "Lightning With The Yellow Hair".
The fort was practically abandoned, with barely a doctor in sight, and while Elsa was taken care of at a Native American camp that her family happened upon as they arrived in Montana, there wasn't much hope. As the chief explained, the Lakota dip their arrows in manure, making a hit almost certainly fatal.
Elsa was also planning to split from the group to stay with Sam, but after many goodbyes, everyone decided they were going to Oregon anyway. Even Elsa decided to leave her boyfriend so she could find out where Oregon was, while planning to return to the plains in June to reunite with him.

The site Elsa chose to be buried was a valley called “Paradise” which ended up becoming the Yellowstone Ranch. Though the Duttons finally made it to the future site of their homestead, it came at the cost of James and Margaret losing their beloved daughter Elsa.
Throughout the episode, Elsa's narration is used to fill in the gaps of what has happened to the Dutton clan in the four decades that have passed since the events of "1883."
Elsa is the sister of John Dutton Senior, but her relationship with Costner's character is more complicated. As John Dutton Junior came into the mix, Elsa is Costner's character's great aunt.
