Alex (born Alakay) is a male African lion. He's happy, go-lucky and is best friends with Marty (voiced by Chris Rock). He's the star attraction at zoo but learns to adapt to the wild.
Before Alex (whose birth name is revealed to be Alakay) encounters his parents, Zuba and Florrie who were overjoyed to see their son, he re-encounters Nana the old lady, and starts fighting but intentionally allows Nana to win so he could acquire her purse and use her cell phone to search for help.
Alex becomes hungry for his favorite food; steak. Alex then looks at Marty and the rest of the lemurs and pictures them as steak. Alex's mouth waters and he bites Marty in the butt. Alex's claws grow and the lemurs run away.
Makunga appeared and challenged Zuba, and while they tussled, Alex was captured by poachers. Zuba and Florrie explain that Zuba chased after them for weeks, far off the preserve, but finally they felt they had to accept that Alex was killed. They bid Alex good night and leave him to sleep.
Alex reunites with his mother and father, Zuba (Bernie Mac), from whom he was separated as a cub. Alex discovers his father is the king of the lion pride, and is also tricked by his father's rival, Makunga (Alec Baldwin), into participating in the lion rite of passage.
