Azrael is an alias used by multiple fictional characters appearing in American comic books published by DC Comics. The original version, Jean-Paul Valley, was created by Denny O'Neil, Joe Quesada, and Peter Milligan, and debuted in Batman: Sword of Azrael #1 (October 1992).
After Batman had his back broken by Bane, Azrael took on the Batman mantle only to prove himself a psychotic murderer who didn't care about saving the lives of civilians, only in punishing those deemed as sinners.
Azrael just didn't find his methods efficient enough so for a short period of time he actually became a villain. Till then he's been on and off as a member of the extended batman family and an ally of Batman.
In last month's issue #7, Batman was forced to deal with the shocking realization that not only were the Waynes not who he thought they were, but that he's not even a true Wayne. It's Azrael who's actually descended from the family, not Bruce.
Bruce Wayne (Batman) suffers burnout and is systematically assaulted and crippled by a "super steroid"-enhanced genius named Bane. Bruce is replaced as Batman by an apprentice named Jean-Paul Valley (a.k.a. Azrael), who becomes increasingly violent and unstable, tarnishing Batman's reputation.

Who killed Azrael the Batman?
He is a genetically-augmented assassin and murderous vigilante for the secretive catholic extremist group, the Order of St. Dumas. While originally an ally and even apprentice of Batman, Azrael was the one to adopt the Batman moniker following the Dark Knight's crippling defeat at the hands of Bane.
After discovering Azrael's true identity and that the Order of St. Dumas have implanted a microchip in his brain, Batman goes to the clock tower hideout to analyze the chip.
One of Azrael's most iconic achievements within his career as a vigilante was his triumphant defeat of Bane after the terrorist had broken the back of Batman and took over Gotham City's criminal empire near the end of the famous comic book event Batman: Knightfall.
Endings. Kill Batman: Azrael grabs his sword from a shelf, having given it to Batman earlier as a sign of trust, and tries to strike down the Dark Knight from behind. However, Batman counters, and knocks out Azrael, who Batman then locks up in the GCPD.

"Death's Angel," the third novel in the Lost Angels series by Heather Killough-Walden, tells the love story of the archangel Azrael, former Angel of Death, and his recently discovered archess, the beautiful Sophie Bryce.
At the church, Azrael reveals that he has been sent to observe Batman, believing he is a warrior foretold by an ancient prophecy. He reveals he was sent by the Order of St. Dumas to deliver the prophecy to Batman, claiming he is Gotham's only hope.

If you take the sword, you are given the option to break the sword, or stab batman with it. If you stab batman, he will block and beat own azreal saying he is disappointed with him, and take him to prison. If you break the sword, azreal says he is no one's pawn and goes after the people who experimented on him.
You now have a choice of how this ends as Azrael. Take up the sword and approach Batman. You will have the chance to either attack Batman, or destroy the blade. The choice is yours, and while the end of the quest plays out differently, both options will still end the side quest, counting for Gotham's Most Wanted.
At the beginning of Arkham City, while playing as Bruce Wayne, Azrael could be seen on a rooftop nearby, watching Bruce as he was incarcerated into Arkham City. That could imply that Azrael was aware that Bruce Wayne was Batman, which could explain why he never got involved.
However, one of Batman's most infamous successors wasn't even someone who wore the mantle of the Bat. Before he replaced Bruce Wayne as Batman in "Knightfall," Jean-Paul Valley was Azrael, an assassin trained by the Order of St. Dumas, a religious organization with less than noble goals.
He's white in the comics. Not sure why he's different in this one. The 'original' Azrael (Jean-Paul Valley) was white. The Azrael in the game is the current Azrael (Michael Lane), who is indeed African-American.
