Black British Film, a term used here to describe films made by Black-British filmmakers or which have a particular focus on the experiences of Black British people, has had a significant impact on our national cinema and offers a valuable insight into UK history.
Black film is a classification of film that has a broad definition relating to the film involving participation and/or representation of black people. The definition may involve the film having a black cast, a black crew, a black director, a black story, or a focus on black audiences.
The aim of this two-day conference is to consider the politics of race in contemporary British cinema and visual practice and reflect on almost 30 years of black film production vis-a-vis the institutional, technological, textual, cultural and political shifts that have occurred during this period.

His most notable work is Within Our Gates (1920), a film that portrays the years of Jim Crow, the Ku Klux Klan, and the Great Migration.
However, Africans appeared in Britain long before the British colonized Africa. The first Blacks in Britain arrived as soldiers in the Roman armies in the 2nd and 3rd centuries AD. They rebuilt and were stationed along Hadrian's Wall. They were under the rule of Septimus Severus, a Black Roman Emperor based in York.
