It is only after Dumbledore says, “Severus, please…” that he casts Avada Kedavra's curse. As the book later reveals, it was all a part of the plan. Severus was one of the good guys who had the play the role of a villain in order for Voldemort to be weakened enough so Harry could take him down in their final battle.
Dumbledore was dying of a curse set by Voldemort, and only had a few weeks to live. If he died of the curse, that meant Voldemort had killed him and would get the mastery of the Elder Wand. If he killed himself, there was a possibility the Wand would still interpret that as Voldemort's victory.
