It's a magical artifact called the Right Hand of Doom. Hellboy's original arm was lopped off when he was a baby and the Right Hand of Doom grafted on in its place. The arm's original owner was Anum, one of the greater spirits, who created the Ogdru Jahad dragons.
Origins: Originally owned by the great spirit Anum that watched over earth's birth, the indestructible Right Hand of Doom was grafted onto Hellboy when he was just a child by his father Azzael.
As it turns out, Hellboy wasn't born with this powerful appendage, so where exactly did his Right Hand of Doom come from? Simply put, it's not really his. It actually belonged to a being called Anum, who was part of a race of spirits called the Watchers, created by God to watch over the world.
Though now it has become Hellboy's substitute right arm (due to Azzael hacking off his original right hand as a baby and grafting the Hand in its place), the hand is effectively invulnerable and feels no pain, and is much like a sledgehammer when used to punch an enemy.
After sealing the Ogdru Jahad away, Anum was destroyed by his fellow spirits. Only his right hand remained intact as it was kept and preserved by the Hyperboreans, the first race of man. The Right Hand of Doom eventually ended up in the possession of Azzael before he grafted it onto the newborn Hellboy.

Why are Hellboy's horns cut off?
Having immense hatred for his horns, representations of his devilish nature, Hellboy routinely files them down to stubs to prevent himself from giving in to his darker side. In the films, he does this to maintain a somewhat "normal" appearance among his colleagues at B.P.R.D.
Hellboy was created for evil. He was supposed to initiate the destruction of the world. Instead, he chooses to rewrite his destiny, overcome his hardwired malevolence and save all of humanity. (Granted, he does so on his own; God rarely factors in except through iconic jewelry meant to represent Him.)
Weaknesses. Heavenly-forged weapons: Like traditional demons, Hellboy can be hurt or even killed by holy weapons, such as his rosary that burns his skin. This is only the case in the film and while he's 'evil' - in the comics, he is unaffected by holy symbols and relics because he is 'no ordinary creature of Hell.
Alice reaches the top of the tower just in time to witness Hellboy defeat Nimue and the Ogdru Jahad. Before the two could celebrate, Nimue's ghost appears and tears out Hellboy's heart, killing him as she is dragged into Hell.
The second film has Liz dealing with being pregnant with Hellboy's twin children and how that will change their relationship going forward as their lives change due to other plot points. However, in the comic books, Liz and Hellboy are only friends.
As the comic progressed, the details of Hellboy's past were revealed: he was born in Hell to a human mother, his true name is Anung Un Rama, and it is his destiny to serve as the harbinger of the apocalypse.

Grigori Rasputin was a prominent agent of the Ogdru Jahad and the archenemy of Hellboy. (full name: Grigori Yefimovich Rasputin) is a fictional antagonist in the comic book series Hellboy. He is based on the real life Russian mystic that was connected to the late Romanov family of imperial Russia.

The most powerful and first god was the self-created and omnipotent power simply known as God. The other gods are usually viewed as lesser gods, fallen watchers, demons, fairies, Ogdru Hem, aliens or exaggerated humans.
During that time Hellboy killed Satan, fought the various leviathan beasts of the afterlife, and settled into a tragic, lonely future, cut off from everything he loved. It was a bittersweet ending for a larger-than-life character.
Although Hellboy would fit quite seamlessly into several DC or Marvel storylines, he is, in fact, an independent superhero written into the cinematic universes by the great Guillermo del Toro.
Del Toro expressed interest in making a third Hellboy film, but faced setbacks including financial troubles and other project commitments. Despite the director and Ron Perlman's enthusiasm, Hellboy 3 was ultimately shelved due to a lack of financing and studio support.
