The original story clearly gives the reason for the Grinch's problem. The narrator says, “But I think that the most likely reason of all / May have been that his heart was two sizes too small.” The Grinch has a heart problem. He hates and loathes Christmas because his heart is bad.

However, the real reason behind his cold-hearted disposition is because he was picked on when he was a child; he was an outcast at school, was bullied by his classmate, Augustus Maywho and that the horrible treatment is what drove him over the edge to become the Christmas-hating and who-Hating person he was ever known.
The Grinch is bullied cruelly by the other kids in his class because of his looks, and the Grinch reacts angrily by throwing his gift at the Christmas tree. His friends and the teacher laugh at him and do not help him. He leaves the town and never returns.
This leads him to want to get rid of it, which started with him stealing all the Christmas traditions from Whoville, which celebrates Christmas heavily. The story concludes with his heart growing back to original size as returns Christmas to Whoville. Throughout the story, the Grinch is portrayed as the villain.
The movie ends with a celebration of love, family, and community and shows the Grinch's once shriveled heart grow three sizes. In the end (spoiler alert!), he abandons his isolation in the North mountains to live with the jolly Whos.
Seuss first used the name in the book 'Scrambled Eggs Super!' (1953). Before that, Rudyard Kipling used used the word "grinching" in 1892, referring to a harsh, grating noise. Grinch had also been used as a last name for characters since about the early 1900s.
