Summary: Chapter V: The Rescue of the Tin Woodman In the morning, Dorothy and the Scarecrow notice a man made of tin who has been rusted in place for a year. After Dorothy rescues him by oiling his joints, the Tin Woodman asks to join the trip to the Emerald City, hoping the Great Oz will give him a heart.
Viewers were able to relate to a character, whether it was the Scarecrow in need of a brain, the Tin Man in need of a heart, or the Cowardly Lion, in need of courage. The obvious message of the story is that there is no place like home.
The Lion headed toward Toto, but Dorothy stopped him by slapping the Lion on its nose. The Lion stopped and apologized. He told the others that he made loud roaring sounds, so the other animals would not realize he was a coward. The Cowardly Lion decided to join the group.
But in both cases, Dorothy is instantly hailed as a conquering heroine, just as the Wizard was when he touched down in Oz. The message is that people will march behind any authority figure who makes a splash, however undeserving they may be.
What does the silver slippers represent in The Wizard of Oz?
In the book and the play the shoes are silver, not ruby as they were famously depicted in the 1939 film. In his reading of The Wizard of Oz, Littlefield believed that Dorothy was a stand-in for the average American, and that the magic silver shoes represented the late 1890s free silver movement.

Winged Monkeys. According to some writers, the Winged Monkeys of Oz represent Native Americans in the West in the late 1800s.
