The lesson seems to be that "forgetting doesn't work; we need to remember, even the things that hurt." Admitting and accepting their pain eventually leads characters to what could be a reconciliation for the family.

In Insidious 2 it's revealed that Josh had the ability to astral project at a very young age. His travels led him to pick up a dangerous parasite that followed him around for years until his mom Lorraine (played by Barbara Hershey) called in Elise to help him forget his power.
Insidious refers to something that is "slowly and secretly causing harm," and certainly Insidious: Chapter 3's story of a girl who manages to summon an evil spirit when she reaches out to what she thinks is the ghost of her recently deceased mother will cement the meaning of this word in our brains forever.
Elise is killed at the end of the first movie by the Bride in Black, who has successfully possessed Josh. She reappears in the second movie as a spirit in the Further, where she helps Josh get back to his physical body and stop Parker from killing his family.

Josh explains that the horrific moment in the past wasn't Josh, but rather, Josh was possessed, much like Dalton is right now. The two attempt to leave The Further, and as they close the monsters behind the red door, Josh tells Dalton to go on without him, as he holds the door shut from The Red Face Demon.
Insidious is not about a simple haunting of a human being by a ghost or a demon. Rather, the demon in the movie chooses its vessel with a purpose. The journey of father and son reads like a fable, like Icarus, a story to warn those who are gifted of the possible dangers to come.
Neither insidious nor invidious are happy words: insidious describes something that lies in wait to get you, and invidious is something offensive or defamatory. Cancer can be insidious, lurking in your body without your knowing it.
The demon chases them to the red door and Josh stays behind to keep it shut so Dalton will be safe. Dalton returns to his body and paints over his red door painting with black paint, which in turns seals the real door and The Further. Josh meets his father's spirit, who guides him back to the living world.
With that said, movies featuring supernatural experiences are typically inspired by real-life events — but that isn't the case here. As it turns out, Insidious isn't based on a true story. The script was... poor. It felt like an amalgamation of every cliché line and trope you have ever heard in a horror movie put into one script. I audibly laughed at certain lines because they were just too much to handle lol. Also the characters were just plainily not super relatable or enjoyable.
However, it shouldn't be surprising that Insidious is doing well as the franchise is known for being a huge box office draw. When the original Insidious scared its way onto the scene in 2011 it made $100.1 million worldwide which opened The Further to more frighteningly good sequels.
Parents need to know that Insidious is one of the most terrifying scary horror movies in some time, and it's not recommended for younger teens (or anyone without a high tolerance for "jump" scenes).
