The Grimm's version of "Rapunzel" ends happily, with Rapunzel finding her lost love the prince, curing his blindness with her tears, and the couple riding off towards his kingdom to live happily ever after with their twins.
Rapunzel's real story is said to have been loosely based on a true story about a woman, Saint Barbara, in Italy around the 3rd century. The story of Barbara was that she was so beautiful that her father felt he had to lock her in a tower to protect her.
The Hunchback of Notre Dame's tragic original ending
When he laughs as Esmeralda is hung, Quasimodo kills Frollo and visits the cemetery where he mourns Esmeralda, eventually dying of starvation on her grave.
As with many fairy tales, the story ends happily — after all of the grief — with a reunion of Rapunzel and the prince. Yet some authors continue the story beyond that peaceful conclusion to show the baby-thieving witch trapped in the tower forever.
In the original version of the tale, it's not the kiss of a handsome prince that wakes Sleeping Beauty, but the nudging of her newborn twins. That's right. While unconscious, the princess is impregnated by a monarch and wakes up to find out she's a mom twice over.
The original story is dark that included a murder and suicide. When Little Mermaid visits Ursula, the Sea Witch she strikes a deal, swapping her voice and tongue for legs. She will only survive if she wins over the affections of the Prince.

One of the most unsettling of all Disney songs, “Hellfire” goes heavy on the darkness – lust, revenge, damnation, sin… it's all here. It's sung by Judge Claude Frollo (voiced by Tony Jay), the Parisian justice minister and religious zealot tasked with taking care of Quasimodo, the hero of The Hunchback Of Notre Dame.
Summary. The original story of The Little Mermaid is much darker than the Disney version, featuring gruesome elements that wouldn't fit well in a family-friendly film.
Rapunzel herself is a symbol. Named after the food her mother could not ignore, Rapunzel symbolizes desire. Dame Gothel treasures her so much, she hides her in a tower so that the world cannot share her. The prince struggles and strives to find her after his eyes are pierced.
When they are stuck in a dam, Flynn reveals his real name to Rapunzel as Eugene Fitzherbert and she tells him about the power her hair possesses. Over time, the two become closer and eventually realize they have fallen in love during I See the Light.
Before Rapunzel could heal him however, Eugene cut Rapunzel's hair, removing her ability to heal anybody and removing her from her obligation to Mother Gothel.
Rapunzel received a truly fairytale ending in Tangled, complete with a happily ever after with Flynn Rider. Still, the details made little sense. Disney's Tangled substantially changed the original Rapunzel fairytale, but the newly constructed ending made little sense.
Gothel is the main antagonist in Tangled. She kidnapped baby Rapunzel to get the magical power of Rapunzel's golden hair. Its magic can make people young but when the hair is cut, it will lose its power. So instead, she had to kidnap baby Rapunzel to make herself young.
In the Disney movie, Ariel marries Eric and the two live happily ever after. In Andersen's fairy tale, the Little Mermaid takes the knife and agrees to kill the prince. But when she tries to do it, she finds that she can't kill him, and instead, she sacrifices herself to save his life and turns into sea foam.
That story, called Aschenputtel (Cinderella in the English translations), appeared more than 100 years after Perrault's version in the 19th century. Aschenputtel is a much darker tale. Cinderella's wishes come not from a fairy godmother but from a tree growing on her mother's grave.
While lighting itself isn't all that expensive, darkness can be used to hide a lot of things. Halle Bailey is not actually a mermaid, and so having the scenes be darker makes it easier to disguise the CGI work.
