The Society follows the story of a group of teenagers who must learn to run their own community after the rest of the population of their town (West Ham, Connecticut) disappears. The mystery begins when the students of the local high school return early from a canceled field trip and find that everyone else is gone.
Season 1, episode 10, "How It Happens," showed the parents are in the actual West Ham, suggesting the teenagers are in an alternative universe. There was huge a desire to see where the story would go next, which can't happen with The Society canceled.
The plaque seen in the final scene of season one reveals approximately 243 students were transported to New Ham. The name of the town, New Ham, is a variation of the towns original name, West Ham. Charlie the dog is the only thing seen that can travel between New Ham and the original town of West Ham.
The final scene of the series changes everything. In season 1, Gordie worked out that the teenagers weren't in the actual West Ham because of the placement of the moon, hence Allie calling it New Ham instead. In the last scene, the series suddenly switches to the real West Ham.

Pfeiffer was the bus driver who brought the kids who were supposed to go to the Great Smoky Mountains to New Ham. This was discovered by Kelly Aldrich when scrolling through Becca Gelb's phone and finding a picture of Pfeiffer behind Cassandra Pressman.
