The Phantom Menace In the film's climax, Maul duels Qui-Gon and his apprentice Obi-Wan Kenobi (Ewan McGregor). He is able to kill Qui-Gon and knock Obi-Wan down a shaft, but Kenobi propels himself out of the pit and uses Qui-Gon's lightsaber to bisect Maul, sending the two parts of his body falling down the shaft.
Seeing his Master murdered caused Obi-Wan to press his attack aggressively, catching Darth Maul off guard. When Maul regained his composure he was able to Force-push Obi-Wan into a melting pit, where he held on for dear life. Calming himself, Obi-Wan leaped over Maul and used Qui-Gon's lightsaber to sever Maul in two.
Obi-Wan, realizing Maul had to die to protect Luke, ignited his lightsaber then readied himself for one last confrontation. After a tense stare down, Maul then attacked, but Obi-Wan defeated the former Sith Lord in a few quick blows, severing his lightsaber and simultaneously slashing Maul across the chest.
As far as I know, there is no Canon date of birth for Maul, but in Legends, he was born in 54 BBY. In canon, Maul was killed by Obi-Wan Kenobi on Tatooine during the year 2 BBY. If we use the Legends year of birth, then Maul would have been 52 years old when he died.
Lightsaber inconsistencies aside, what kept Darth Maul alive initially was his hatred of Obi-Wan Kenobi. Revenge is a powerful motivator. Revenge plus a mastery over the dark side of the Force is enough to keep half a Sith alive long enough to rebuild themself.

Why was Maul killed so easily?
Maul's skills, on the other hand, became stagnant as he spent the last few decades of his life keeping himself alive and plotting schemes. Given this, it makes sense Obi-Wan quickly defeated Maul in their final duel in Star Wars Rebels.
As the son of Mother Talzin, the Zabrak male was taken from a young age by Sidious to act as his impressionable apprentice. The boy was raised as Darth Maul, a name he carried throughout his life. In Legends, it was insinuated that he was born "Maul" before attaining the honor of the "Darth" title.
Maul most likely knew Sidious' double role as Palpatine and Sidious when he served as Palpatine's apprentice. He definitely knew about Palpatine's goal of creating a galactic empire ruled by the Sith. Maul knows that Sidious is the Emperor.
Sidious revealed to Maul that he did not intend to kill his former apprentice, as he still had use for Maul; it was Sidious' hope that Maul would lead the Sith to Mother Talzin, Maul's mother and the leader of the Nightsisters, so she could be eliminated as a potential threat to the eventual Sith rule of the galaxy.
Chastened by his former Master on the principle of the Rule of Two, Maul abandoned his claim to the mantle of the Sith, focusing instead on building an empire of his own—the Crimson Dawn—by controlling the criminal underworld.
After a period of tension, Maul strikes first but is quickly countered and defeated by Kenobi. Before Maul dies, Kenobi stays by his side and reveals to him that he is watching over whom he believes is the Chosen One, with Maul's last words being, "He will avenge us". Ezra and Chopper return to base on Maul's ship.
During the battle, Anakin, who had been known as the Sith Lord Darth Vader, was redeemed by Luke and brought balance to the Force. However, the redemption cost Anakin his life, having been mortally wounded by the Emperor, Darth Sidious, while killing his former Master.
Per canon in the titular story within From a Certain Point of View: Return of the Jedi, Obi-Wan, like the true Jedi he was, gave Maul a proper cremation according to Jedi customs before Order 66. Maul WAS NOT buried in canon or left to the desert creatures, but I cannot answer for Legends.
Why is Darth Maul red and not yellow? Darth Maul was originally born a black-skinned Nightbrother, but was later stripped of his markings and given red-skinned Sith tattoos by Darth Sidious. His eyes were also turned yellow with red rims, either due to his touch of the dark side or the eyes he was born with.
He had killed his master, Qui-Gon Jinn, for which Obi-Wan got his revenge by slicing the Sith in half. But after Maul took yet another person away from him, Obi-Wan absolutely hated Maul. The Jedi Master almost let his rage and anger get the best of him, growing close to the dark side before he rejected it.
He regretted it because he had essentially wasted 20 years training him. But since he was an enemy at the time of his death on Tatooine, Sid was glad that he did not have to keep watching his back anymore now that the loose ends were tied off.
The two were able to free Maul after he had been interrogated by the Sith Lord Count Dooku, and together the three rendezvoused with more Death Watch forces on the moon of Zanbar. Maul took command of his forces once again, and assured them that the war they had longed for was at hand.
Even in the old Star Wars canon, the two had a confrontation, as they met in the comic book Star Wars Tales #9, where Maul pieced together that Anakin was Vader.
Darth Maul and Qui-Gon Jinn's duel on Tatooine in Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace revealed the Sith Order's survival to the Jedi after 1,000 years of secrecy, with Jinn somehow concluding that Maul was a Sith Lord.
He was: Darth Tyrannus. His persona as Count Dooku was better suited to his role as leader of the Separatist faction. If he revealed himself as a Sith publicly, rather than just a former Jedi who left the order because of its supposed corruption, that would have damaged his credibility to most of the Separatists.
Even though Kylo Ren uses a red lightsaber, harnesses the dark side of the Force, and wears a cape, he is not a Sith. Because of that, he can never hold the title of Darth. Instead, he was just a chaotic mess of the dark side (until he eventually found his way back to the light).
Anakin Skywalker's birth mystery is solved - his mother, Shmi Skywalker, reveals that there was no father and she can't explain what happened. Qui-Gon Jinn believed that the Force itself created Anakin in Shmi's womb, making him the Chosen One who would bring balance to the Force.
I think he always knew Palpatine was his true enemy, but knew he couldn't ever take him on. Obi Wan was kind of a deflection for his rage. It doesn't feel like Maul really "hates" Obi, it's more like he's obsessed with Obi.
