Katniss' primary motivation throughout the series is protecting her family and friends. Prior to the Reaping, she strives to keep her family functional and fed; after volunteering, she wants to win so she can return home and continue that role.
The protagonist of the series, Katniss is a tough young woman who has a strong urge to always protect those weaker than herself. At the start of the novel, she craves little more than a simple, safe life for herself and her loved ones.
Katniss is determined to protect Prim throughout the novel. Just as she was during Katniss' first Hunger Games, Prim remains a strong motivating factor for Katniss during the Quell. Katniss has spent most of her life taking care of Prim by hunting food for her and volunteering to take her place in the Hunger Games.
All in all, she is still motivated by her selflessness to someone she loves, Prim and her mother. The `Girl On Fire` turns out to be more than just a girl with flaming costume; the fire has ignited new fury and at the same time spirit inside her own self.
The purposes of the Hunger Games are to provide entertainment for the Capitol and to remind the districts of the Capitol's power and its lack of remorse or forgiveness for the failed rebellion of the current competitors' ancestors.

Katniss shows her decision in deciding to kill other tributes in order to survive inside the game. Furthermore, Katniss independent in deciding her own fate.
Katniss is rendered deaf in one ear after she blows up the Careers' supplies, and she doesn't regain any hearing on her left side until afterwards when the Capitol gives her a hearing aid.
She's able to come up with plans in a crunch, and she's great at thinking on her feet. While Katniss sometimes makes impulsive grand gestures, it's generally when she's trying to protect the people she loves. She's incredibly loyal, but she's slow to trust new people. There is a special significance behind her name.
Characterization. Peeta is the same age as Katniss, making him 16 years old in The Hunger Games and 17-18 in Catching Fire and Mockingjay. Peeta is of "medium height, stocky build" and has "ashy blond hair that falls in waves over his forehead." He has blue eyes.
In fact, the books contain subtle text clues that Peeta is the taller of the two. When Peeta and Katniss stand facing each other in the final moments of the first Games, for example, this passage ensues: “On the count of three?” Peeta leans down and kisses me once, very gently.
