Spencer is sibling to Elsa and John Sr. He is a former soldier-turned-big game hunter who is called home from Africa to help his family defend their land. While in Africa, Spencer meets and falls in love with Alex (Julia Schlaepfer), and they return to Montana together to help his family.
He called her two weeks later and offered her the lead role in the Yellowstone prequel series 1883, playing Elsa Dutton, the 18-year-old daughter who embarks with her parents, James Dutton (Tim McGraw) and Margaret Dutton (Faith Hill), on a treacherous trek across the Great Plains to Montana.
Elsa was also planning to split from the group to stay with Sam, but after many goodbyes, everyone decided they were going to Oregon anyway. Even Elsa decided to leave her boyfriend so she could find out where Oregon was, while planning to return to the plains in June to reunite with him.

Like Beethoven, Elsa was in love with Ennis and dedicated the moving performance to him. Unknown to her, as the music played, her mother was struggling with her own life trying to save a drowning crosser and getting entangled in the aggressive waters herself.
As Ennis points out, “you sure aren't shy hard-timing me.” With a smile, Elsa agrees, “No, that comes pretty easy to me,” and she begins to sing the Stephen Foster parlor song “Beautiful Dreamer” to both Ennis and the cows.
But before her death, Margaret wrote a letter to her husband's brother, Jacob, who then found and raised Elsa's surviving brothers, John Sr. and Spencer. 1883 viewers met John Sr. as a young boy, played by Audie Rick.
The reason why 1883 is not getting a second season is that Sheridan and his creative team have told the story that they wanted to tell, so there is neither a need nor a desire to produce a second season. According to Sheridan; "We wanted to make a 10-hour movie that ended, and that's what we did.
When they showed what was finished of the film to a Story Trust group several months prior to release, many were still confused about who the voice was supposed to belong to. It was after that the decision was made to fully commit to the voice calling to Elsa being that of her mother, Iduna.
In Frozen 2, Elsa's voice changed slightly to reflect the character's growth and evolution since the events of the first film. Idina Menzel worked closely with the filmmakers and the voice over agency to ensure that her performance captured the changes in Elsa's character.
