Originally titled The Bear and the Bow, the film was first announced in April 2008 alongside Up (2009) and Cars 2 (2011). Chapman, who had just wrapped up work as a story artist on Cars (2006), drew inspiration for the film's story from her relationship with her own daughter.

Disney Pixar's Brave is filled with numerous historically accurate details, from the costumes and setting to the themes and ideals. Though it contains a few inaccuracies for the sake of storytelling, Brave's overall historical feel makes the viewer feel as if they are really in historical Scotland.
Generally speaking, however, the Irish accent is softer than its Scottish counterpart. It's widely considered to have a more musical lilt to it. The Scottish accent shortens vowels instead of softening them, giving it a harder sound.
