John Wick is a retired assassin who returns back to his old ways after a group of Russian gangsters steal his car and kill a puppy which was given to him by his late wife Helen. The film was developed in 2012, where principal photography began September 25, 2013 and wrapped on December 20, 2013.
John became the top enforcer for the New York Russian crime syndicate, becoming an infamous hitman. He was nicknamed "Baba Yaga" after the supernatural Boogeyman-like entity in Slavic folklore. Eventually, John fell in love with a woman named Helen.
He was orphaned at a young age and left his Padhorje village to live with Winston, an old friend of his father's. Eventually, he took his place in the Ruska Roma, a powerful crime syndicate controlled by The Director.
In the first movie, John Wick struck a deal with crime lord Viggo Tarasov, who said that John could retire if he completed an “impossible task" — a single night of murder and mayhem that would swiftly consolidate Viggo's power over his competitors, making him one of the top crime lords in New York City.
Viggo was willing to grant his wish, but with the catch that John had to complete an "Impossible Task." That meant he needed to defeat all of Tarasov's enemies in one night to ensure that they'd have no way to regroup and retaliate.
