After her younger sister, Prim, is chosen to participate in the 74th Hunger Games, Katniss volunteers to take her place as the female tribute from District 12. Her acts of defiance against The Capitol in the arena led the people of Panem to view her as the face of the rebellion.
Born on May 8th in District 12, she is the older sister of Primrose Everdeen and the daughter of Mr. Everdeen and Carine Everdeen. After Primrose was reaped to participate in the 74th Hunger Games, Katniss volunteered to take her place as the female tribute from District 12.
Over the years, District 12 has had only three winners: Haymitch, Katniss, and Peeta. As Katniss was the only female in the winners' pool for District 12, she was automatically the chosen tribute. Haymitch was chosen as the male tribute, but Peeta volunteered to take his place.
Katniss's focus on survival and her family's safety prevented her from fully considering romance, but her feelings for Peeta and Gale diverged in the end. Katniss ultimately chose Peeta because he understood her trauma and she didn't want to lose him, proving her love for him.
As an independent woman, Katniss knows what she wants and she does not let other people determine her choices. She shows the girl power characteristics by independently making her own decisions, believing in her own decision, following what she thinks is right, and free to choose her own companion.
During the Hunger Games, Katniss proves strong, resourceful, and determined. She does what it takes to survive, but she never loses her humanity. She befriends the youngest tribute, Rue, and later takes care of Peeta, even though she's not sure if she can trust him.
Gale does not marry anyone in The Hunger Games. He and Katniss talk about running away together and starting a new life in the wilderness, but they never officially marry.

All Gale wants is to keep his family and those close to him safe. By the time he was 18 (the same year "The Hunger Games" takes place), he had put his name into the Reaping 42 times in order to gain extra food for his family and reduce the chance of his three younger siblings being chosen as a District 12 tribute.
However, each tesserae they sign up for puts another slip with their name in the reaping ball. It is also cumulative, so Katniss Everdeen, when she was sixteen, had her name put in the glass ball twenty times.
In The Hunger Games, Prim was chosen because she was wearing the mockingjay pin. I noticed Katniss gives Prim the Mockingjay pin before the reaping and prim wears it on her lapel. Considering many in district 12 can't afford jewellery, she stands out during a ceremony that's televised to all citizens.
Rue, the girl tribute from District 11, is small and reminds Katniss of Prim. Rue is able to hop from tree to tree like a squirrel, a skill that helps her outrun and evade her competition. She tips Katniss off to the tracker jacker nest that saves Katniss' life.
If you really think about it, Katniss didn't really start the revolution, Rue's death did. The people saw the bond and love they had for one another and how scared and innocent Rue was, I think they also connected it with Prim because that would have been her if Katniss didn't volunteer.
Peeta, Annie, and Beetee vote no, while Johanna and Enobaria vote yes. After some thought, Katniss demands to kill Snow. Once she receives an agreement, she votes yes, for Prim. Realizing something is up (as Katniss would never do that), Haymitch votes yes, too.
When Katniss comes home to District 12, Gale immediately confesses his love for Katniss, and she realizes she might have feelings for him, too — but she can't explore them, because she has to continue her fake relationship with Peeta or else her entire family, including “cousin Gale,” will be killed.
It's only implied that they get it on via snuggling and other affectionate acts in close quarters — but if you have read the book, they really imply that they took their relationship to the next level.
The woods are now ruined. Katniss decides that the Capitol views her and Gale's weekly hunting trips — and the one time that Gale unexpectedly kissed her, which Snow knows about — as flaunting her defiance in front of the entire district.
After Prim's death, Gale leaves voluntarily because neither of them can avoid the matter of Prim's death having been caused by Gale's invention, with Katniss letting him go without a word. Katniss subsequently grows back together with Peeta, whom she finds she loves again now that he is recovered from his hijacking.
Winning the Hunger Games came at a great cost for Haymitch, as President Snow ordered the death of his family and girlfriend as punishment for his rebellion. Despite his rough exterior, Haymitch became a crucial ally and mentor for Katniss and played a key role in the rebellion against the Capitol.
After their last interview, in which the two continue to affect their romantic feelings for one another, Peeta comes to the realization Katniss has staged her love for him all along.
The only information the audience has about Katniss' future is that she and Peeta have a child together 15 years after their experiences in the Rebellion (at 33 years old) and that five years later, they have a second child.
