The story is about two girls the same age with the same name who are both moving to Tokyo. NANA, a punk rock beauty trying to make her band Black Stones "Blast" famous and Nana who is ultimately trying to find happiness through love.
The series centers on Nana Osaki and Nana Komatsu, two women who move to Tokyo at the age of 20, with the story focused on Nana O.'s pursuit for fame and Nana K.'s pursuit for romance, all while struggling to maintain their friendship.
The reason the ending is so unsatisfying is because the manga hasn't been completed. The author of the manga has been battling illness for years and because of that she's taken a hiatus from Nana since 2009.
Even when Ren left, Nana did not stop loving him for a second, and even though Nana decided to stay, Ren could never truly leave her behind. They both had difficult pasts, which definitely affected them in unimaginable ways. Despite this, the bond between them was and remains incomparable to this day.
In contrast to Hachi, Nana Osaki has a calm and collected attitude, as well as a slight rebellious streak that belies emotional vulnerability. This is due to the fact that she had a very lonely upbringing; her mother abandoned her and her irascible grandmother raised her.

Why did Ai Yazawa stop Nana?
Nana was made into an anime (produced by Madhouse) and a successful movie with a sequel in Japan. In June 2009, it was revealed that Yazawa had contracted a sudden illness, and had to be sent to the hospital for treatment, putting Nana on hiatus.
The most unrealistic thing people have pointed out is that there is no way a large apartment with two separate bedrooms would cost only ¥70,000 in Tokyo. But the story and its locations are interweaved with reality and the author has stated before that Nana is loosely based on real people and events.
Though Nana and Hachi approach dating differently—Nana doesn't like hooking up and is still fixated on her first love Ren Honjo, whereas Hachi quickly falls in love and gets into relationships with older, married men—all of their relationships hinge on sex.

In the present, Nana and Hachi have a falling out when Nana becomes pregnant by Takumi and decides to marry him, despite the abuse she endures at his hand. Five years later, they've had a second child, but their marriage is falling apart.
What makes Nana's ending and romance so sad or disappointing was that the anime was cut short, and it just ended rather inconclusively. That's because the original manga author was battling with an illness at the time and their work went on a hiatus.
Paradise Kiss manga creator Ai Yazawa also wrote the wildly popular josei manga, Nana, so perhaps it's no surprise that this story also has a not-so-happy ending.
However her panic disorder continued to worsen overtime and Nana has cut contact with everyone and has fled to England, with Nana K. and the others searching for her. She continues to sing as a solo now and has grown out her hair and dyed it blond. She still wears Ren's engagement ring.
Nana Komatsu is a 20-year-old woman who moves to Tokyo to join her friends and her boyfriend, Shoji. She has a penchant for falling in love easily, and when she was in her third year of high school, she was in an extramarital relationship with Asano before Asano ended their relationship.
In the story, since both main characters have the same first name, to differentiate one Nana to the other, Nana Osaki affectionately called Nana Komatsu "Hachi", because she thinks Nana Komatsu behaves like a dog, faithful but sometimes annoying. This is actually a play of word.
Ren was named after Ren Honjo, the lead guitarist of Trapnest and previous bassist of Blast. Ren is often mistaken by readers to be the second child as while still an unborn child he was referred to as a girl, but he is Nana and Takumi's first child.

The baby is a girl, and is named Satsuki, as that was the name Ren had liked and wanted for a child, but Nana is unable/unwilling to take care of her — she's never been interested in being a mother, and isn't able to cope with raising Satsuki. This is what causes her to run away and be eventually presumed dead.
