Meanwhile, in 2013's Oldboy, Joe catches Adrian's sister Amanda having sex with their father Arthur at school. She's horribly teased by all of the students afterwards. By the end of the film, it's revealed that Arthur is having sex with both Amanda and Adrian.

When Dae-su sets out to finally face Woo-jin at his apartment, he shows Dae-su a picture album, and, in one of the most brutal plot twists of all time, Dae-su discovers that Mi-do, who he had fallen in love and had a sexual relationship with, is his daughter.
Adrian Pryce pays Chaney to kidnap Joe Doucett and imprison him for 20 years. 20 years later, he releases Joe at Pryce's order and continues watching the prisoners.
At the end of the film, Joe Doucett answers the questions that Adrian wanted answered. Adrian, in return, reveals his revenge- Joe's new lover Marie Sebastian is in fact his daughter Mia, grown up and under a alias and unaware of Joe's identity as her father.

Why does Dae-su cut his tongue?
Dae-su desperately apologises for spreading the rumour that led to the death of Woo-jin's sister. Dae-su begs for Mi-do to be kept ignorant and debases himself by begging on all fours, acting like a dog, and licking Woo-jin's shoes. When Woo-jin is unmoved, Dae-su cuts out his tongue as an act of penance.
It should be noted that while the torture, self-harm and murder scenes are disturbing and often graphic, the hand-to-hand combat or action sequences are almost always kept to a non-fatal and PG-13 level. The infamous hammer fight scene and the other scenes of fighting are not bloody or gruesome at all.
The heart of 'Oldboy' is about vengeance. But when the film released in 2003, director Park Chan-wook said the film does not praise vengeance itself but instead shows what can happen if we do not find useful ways to express anger and revenge.
He is a wealthy businessman who seeks out extreme revenge against his former classmate Oh Dae-su for playing an indirect part in causing his sister's death from suicide. He is hellbent on not killing, but ruining the lives of all those who wronged him in order for them to suffer as he has.
For one thing, it's far from super. Not the quality, per se (although, for Lee, that's off, too), but the energy. Content collapsed. Viewers new to Oldboy will appreciate Lee's affecting and entertaining tale of a man unjustly imprisoned.
There is no question that the original Oldboy from 2003 is the better film. Obviously, they have their similarities and differences, but Park's Oldboy has much more character to it.

Both films are based on Shinichi Gotō being imprisoned for 10 years in the manga, but the 2003 film increases that time period to 15 years while the 2013 remake doubles it to 20. Additionally, Oh Dae-su is given five days to figure out Lee Woo-jin's identity to coincide with the death of Lee Soo-ah.
Finally, the father killed his wife, daughter and himself, leaving Adrian severely wounded. Adrian says that he lost everything as a consequence of Joe's actions, but keeps his promise and takes Joe to see Mia. Joe learns that the crime show he saw on TV during his imprisonment was staged, and shown only to him.
Watch the ending again. When Oh Dae-su is split into himself, who is ignorant of the secret, and The Monster, who knows the secret, it is The Monster who walks away and Oh Dae-su who stands still and watches The Monster go.
Thankfully, Oldboy's octopus-eating scene isn't gratuitous. Octopus is considered an aphrodisiac in Korean culture, and it foreshadows Oldboy's Oedipal themes by hinting at Oh Dae-su and Mi-do's relationship.
The violence is very realistic and grisly however and consists of two only partially shown torture scenes with teeth extraction, the famous hammer fight and a hand to hand combat scene. Most of the violence is not detailed at all. It's even very hard to see what really happens in some scenes.
Oldboy is actually a story about Lee Woo-Jin's wrath—showing his desire to inflict the same wound he suffered when his sister committed suicide and ended their love affair. After the loss of his sister, terrorizing Dae-Su gave his life meaning. With his vengeance fulfilled, his will to live ceased as well.
The desire to blame others turning into the awareness of one's own guilt (and vice-versa) appears in Oldboy as well: when Oh is imprisoned he does not just plan his revenge, but tries to find out the reason for his imprisonment, which comes out the same as writing down what wrong he has done to others, and admitting ...
The original film achieves a sublime blending of ultra-violence with extreme art, while the remake feels bogged down in its copycat status, and its overall lighter tone hampers its enigmatic, disconcerting story of revenge.
