CNN) — Walt Disney World is closing down Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser, one of its newest and splashiest attractions, at the end of September, the resort announced Thursday. The ultra-immersive – and ultra-pricey – bow to the "Star Wars" universe opened to much fanfare in spring 2022.
And while it received glowing reviews from guests, ultimately it performed below Disney's expectations, according to Disney Parks, Experiences and Products Chairman Josh D'Amaro. “It didn't perform exactly like we wanted it to perform, so we decided that we were going to sunset this in September,” D'Amaro said.
It was a gamble on a relatively niche — and expensive — concept. But at about $4,800 for a two-person “cabin,” the cheapest tier offered, Disney fans complained that it was simply too much for two days. In May, barely one year since opening, Disney announced it was shuttering the Galactic Starcruiser.
After spending hundreds of millions of dollars to build an immersive “Star Wars”-themed hotel at Walt Disney World, Disney said on Thursday that, amid sweeping corporate cost-cutting, it would close the underperforming attraction in September, only about 18 months after it opened.
But the Starcruiser was also said to be immensely costly to operate, primarily because it employed a cast of about a dozen core actors who had to perform and interact with guests in full-day shifts.
According to an insider, Disney kept most of the props of this part of the park in case something like this happened. Fortunately, it did. We expect Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge to close permanently by the end of 2023.
