Plot. In 1984, 17-year-old Daniel LaRusso and his mother Lucille move from Newark, New Jersey, to Reseda, Los Angeles, California. Their apartment's handyman is an eccentric but kind and humble Okinawan immigrant named Mr. Miyagi.
The original Karate Kid trilogy centered on the sensei-student relationship between Daniel Larusso (Ralph Macchio) and Mr. Miyagi (Noriyuki "Pat" Morita), with the entires set between 1984 and 1985.
Daniel LaRusso (Ralph Macchio) is a teenager who moves from New Jersey to Los Angeles after his widowed mother, Lucille (Randee Heller), gets a new job. Daniel is unhappy at having to move, make new friends and leave his old friends behind, but he promises Lucille he'll do his best to make a new life in California.
Before the plan for the new movie was revealed, Jackie Chan's 2010 Karate Kid remake was the only part of the franchise that wasn't officially part of the same canon. However, the movie is so different from the original that crossing them over won't cause any meta clashes among the Karate Kid 2024 cast.
In real time, the span between Karate Kid III (1989) and the Next Karate Kid (1994) is five years, a span that sounds reasonable. Karate Kid III is set in 1985, and since Next Karate Kid seems set in modern times, the time elapsed between films would be 9 years. "You can't even speak English!" True?
Release. The film is scheduled to be released on May 30, 2025 in the United States. The film was originally set to be released on June 7, 2024, but was delayed to December 13, 2024, due to the 2023 SAG-AFTRA strike. It was moved once more to May 30, 2025, so that it wouldn't conflict with the final season of Cobra Kai.
It's an update that, along with the shifted setting and expanded characters, that makes The Karate Kid remake a worthwhile companion to the original. The Verdict: The 1984 original, by split decision, mainly because Macchio is so good.
Mr. Miyagi died November 15, 2011, as depicted by his gravestone in Cobra Kai, meaning that he was 86 years old at the time of his passing. Cobra Kai began in 2018, where the continuation of the "Miyagi-verse" splits the focus between Daniel and Johnny.
Chan told interviewers that film cast members generally referred to the film as The Kung Fu Kid, and he believed the film would only be called The Karate Kid in America, and The Kung Fu Kid in China. This theory held true in the People's Republic of China, where the film is titled The Kung Fu Dream (Chinese: 功夫梦).
Development. The Karate Kid is a semi-autobiographical story based on the life of its screenwriter, Robert Mark Kamen. At age 17, after the 1964 New York World's Fair, Kamen was beaten up by a gang of bullies. He thus began to study martial arts in order to defend himself.
Director Harald Zwart's fifth rendition partnered with Overbrook Entertainment, Will Smith's management company, and Sony Motion Pictures, to create the film. It starred Smith's son, Jaden Smith (Horn). Inspired by the 2008 Beijing Summer Olympics, Overbrook Entertainment decided to set the new movie in China (Horn).
Twelve-year-old Dre Parker (Jaden Smith) moves with his widowed mother (Taraji P. Henson) from Detroit to Beijing, China, where he has to learn a new language, acclimate to a new school, and deal with a completely different culture.
The locations for The Karate Kid in 1984 were around Los Angeles but the revamp shifts the action to the Far East, as Sherry Parker (Taraji P Henson) is relocated with her son, Dre (Jaden Smith), from Detroit to Beijing.
Elizabeth Shue, beloved star and teen heartthrob, stole millions of kids adoration as the love interest to Daniel in the Karate Kid. Elizabeth Shue was born on October 6, 1963 making her 20 years old at the time of filming!
Miyagi fought against the Japanese Empire in the Second World War and while he was doing that his wife Mrs. Miyagi, gave birth to a son inside an internment camp and got sick and they didn't send any doctor to her so she and the son both died. Mr. Miyagi still won a medal of honour for being a war hero.
As a way of saying "thank you," Miyagi taught him karate (and Pierce taught him ballroom dancing). While still fighting overseas, he received a telegram informing him that on November 2, 1944, his wife and newborn child (who were still interned at Manzanar) died due to "complications arising from childbirth".
In the film, Miyagi tells Daniel that he is from Okinawa, a chain of islands south of Japan, and mentions to Daniel that he was part of the 442nd Infantry, which was an all Japanese-American Unit from World War II, one of the units most highly decorated for valor (so explaining why Miyagi has an Army Congressional ...
The Karate Kid (2010) contains intense segments of graphic martial arts violence enacted by young boys against other boys. It also shows frequent bullying. Much of the violence could be imitated by children who might see Dre and other characters as role models.
Season 1. 34 years after the first film, Daniel is happily married to his wife Amanda Steiner, and has two children, Samantha (born 2002) and Anthony (born 2005). He and his wife own the LaRusso Auto Group, a chain of car dealerships in the San Fernando Valley.
Summaries. Work causes a single mother to move to China with her young son; in his new home, the boy embraces kung fu, taught to him by a master. When his mother's career results in a move to China, 12-year-old Dre Parker (Jaden Smith) finds that he is a stranger in a strange land.
When Miguel arrives in Mexico, he finally meets his dad, Hector Salazar, who has a new girlfriend and son. Upon spending time with him, however, he soon learns that he truly is a dangerous man who has no sense of family and no regrets of leaving Carmen and his life in Ecuador.
