Katniss's first reaction when she hears the news about the rule change is to call out Peeta's name, despite the dangers of alerting the tributes to her presence.
Katniss has a visceral reaction to the terrible news and runs outside. She heads for the woods, but that's forbidden, so she ends up in the Victor's Village alone. She has a hysterical fit. This is the one fate she never saw coming, despite all the awful things she anticipated in her future.
While there was a chance of Katniss getting medicine to help Peeta at this feast, he didn't want her risking her life against the other tributes just to save him. By tricking Peeta into consuming the sleep syrup (which knocked him out cold), Katniss was able to retrieve the medicine and save his life.

Did Peeta know Katniss was faking?
Later, the two learn President Snow considered their actions to be an act of rebellion against the Capitol. After their last interview, in which the two continue to affect their romantic feelings for one another, Peeta comes to the realization Katniss has staged her love for him all along.
Katniss here's this and understands that even though she may not love Peeta (then) that it's one less person who has to die. (At least that's what I have always thought.) Katniss realizes that if she pretends to be in love with Peeta people will want the capitol to let them survive.
It's no surprise that Katniss becomes traumatized—after all, the Hunger Games are the perfect breeding ground for PTSD. Severe, life-threatening, interpersonal violence as well as witnessing atrocities and killing enemies in combat are particular risk factors for the disorder.
She's able to come up with plans in a crunch, and she's great at thinking on her feet. While Katniss sometimes makes impulsive grand gestures, it's generally when she's trying to protect the people she loves. She's incredibly loyal, but she's slow to trust new people. There is a special significance behind her name.

Katniss's focus on survival and her family's safety prevented her from fully considering romance, but her feelings for Peeta and Gale diverged in the end. Katniss ultimately chose Peeta because he understood her trauma and she didn't want to lose him, proving her love for him.
It's only implied that they get it on via snuggling and other affectionate acts in close quarters — but if you have read the book, they really imply that they took their relationship to the next level.

She hears the cannons in the late afternoon, each shot signifying a dead tribute: eleven dead in all, leaving thirteen in the Games. The Capitol will project the faces of the dead later that night, so Katniss doesn't immediately know who's left.
Gale, back from District 2, visits Katniss in her room and gives her a single arrow: a symbol, he explains, of having Katniss fire the last shot of the war. Katniss realizes that she will never again completely trust Gale because of her lingering suspicion about the parachute bombing.
Many years later, Katniss and Peeta are parents to a daughter and a son. For nearly fifteen years, Katniss was hesitant about having children even though Peeta has wanted children for all those years.
Toward the end of the novel, Katniss realizes that Haymitch has been keeping information from her and using her to help the rebellion, causing her to feel extremely betrayed. On the other hand, his goals are generally good ones.
Katniss and Peeta were the first and only tributes to receive a 12. During the 71st Hunger Games, Johanna Mason kept up a guise of weakness, so she presumably got a low score on purpose. "A few years" before the 74th Hunger Games, an unknown male victor only received a score of three.
Katniss spends the rest of the day crying on her bed. She believes that the Gamemakers will punish her for what she's done, that they'll make her an Avox and cut out her tongue. She imagines all of the possible scenarios, but is most fearful that the Capitol people will go after Prim and her mother.
People who suffer from PTSD can also experience trouble sleeping, which both Katniss and Peeta deal with, exhibit self-destructive or reckless behavior or can be aggressive and irritable. Both tributes also have trouble controlling themselves and often react aggressively to situations that upset them.
Haymitch suffers from PTSD ever since he was in the games. Because of the way he won his games he was punished by The Capitol leaving Haymitch with no loved ones. Haymitch drinks to cope with this and the fact he has to mentor tributes year after year like pigs to the slaughter.
Katniss comes close to crying, something she knows she mustn't do because it would indicate weakness to the other tributes and make her look vulnerable; thankfully, Haymitch distracts the crowd and the cameras by stumbling off stage.
In Chapter 9, as Caesar Flickerman interviews Peeta before the Games, Peeta reveals to Caesar and all of Panem that he's in love with Katniss. Peeta's revelation sets in motion the storyline of him and Katniss as ill-fated lovers that carries on throughout the Games.
It took time for Peeta to break out of that conditioning, and even when the possibility existed that Peeta could be a danger to Katniss, the two of them still elected to be together and build a future in a post-Hunger-Games world. Their love for one another is evident.
While the Hunger Games film never talked about it, the Catching Fire novel explained why she could only communicate through hand gestures. Katniss briefly mentioned that a previous stroke could have caused Mags' garbled speech. However, post-traumatic stress disorder could have also caused her speech incapacity.
