Following his return to his violent ways in order to avenge his murdered dog, Santino sees an opportunity to exploit the favor John owes him in order to take Gianna's place at the High Table. To help push John to cooperate, Santino blows up John's house.
More than five years later, Santino forced John to honor the debt and commanded him to assassinate Santino's own sister, Gianna D'Antonio. John succeeds, thus making Santino the next head of the crime organization known as the Camorra, and consequently one of the twelve sitting members of the High Table.
John Wick, to complete his "impossible task" assigned by Viggo Tarasov, which allowed him to retire and marry his deceased wife, Helen, asked Santino for help. As a form of contract, Santino swore John to a "Marker," an unbreakable promise symbolized by a "blood oath" medallion.
Winston shoots John Wick after having negotiated with The Adjudicator to return to the fold. In this cinematic universe, the characters genuinely believe that Wick has been eliminated. But the betrayal is merely a plot device to raise the stakes even more for Parabellum's ending.

Who put the $14 million bounty on John Wick?
After the unsanctioned killing of crime lord and new member of the High Table Santino D'Antonio in the New York City Continental, John is declared "Ex-Communicado" by his handlers at the High Table and placed under a $14 million bounty.
Winston gives John a blood oath marker and warns him he can only give him an hour's head start. In John Wick: Chapter 2, there isn't any explicit explanation for the marker John is given. It's assumed to be John's original marker from his blood oath with Santino.
Franchise star Ian McShane can't say for sure that his Winston character is the father of Keanu Reeves' John Wick, but he's happy to fuel the fan theories. In John Wick: Chapter 4, it was subtly teased that there may be a family connection between Winston and John Wick.
His superior, Viggo Tarasov, promised to allow John to quit if he first completed an "impossible task": killing all of Tarasov's enemies in a single night. Having succeeded, John retired and lived peacefully for just over five years.

The movie is full of groundbreaking action sequences, but it's also surprisingly emotional, as John is seen killed in a duel with Caine (Donnie Yen). The assassin shares his final words with his old friend Winston (Ian McShane), then is buried in New York with a headstone reading, "Loving Husband."
They are so surprisingly honorable and instead of finishing John when having a good chance they help him up even leave him to recover a bit in the fight, which was a reason why John ultimately spared them out of gratitude for their fair play.
Helen died of a terminal illness shortly before the 2014 John Wick movie, though the franchise doesn't explicitly identify the illness. John Wick's wife was sick for a long time before her death, leaving her time to arrange for John to be given hope through a puppy and make peace with her own fate.
John Wick earned that would-be death sentence because he broke The Continental's biggest rule: Do not conduct “business” – as in, don't kill anybody – on the premises.
After John killed Gianna by the orders of his brother, Santino immediately took her place within the High Table and ordered his right-hand woman Ares and many of his men to kill John to avenge his sister.
Why? Well, according to the Journal's report, Reeves himself "stripped" a good portion of John's dialogue in Chapter 4, with the support of franchise director Chad Stahelski, reducing his words by half and instead relying on body language and, of course, fighting.
Played by Shamier Anderson, Mr. Nobody, also known as Tracker, is a bounty hunter with his sights set on Keanu Reeves' eponymous assassin, though bides his time taking Wick down until the reward hits a certain point.
In John Wick: Chapter 4, Winston refers to John Wick as "my son" while saying goodbye to him in Russian at John's grave. As John is stated several times to be an orphan, it's unclear if this is meant to be literal or if it's just a term of affection by Winston.
He is a notorious Russian crime boss who is the head (or Pakhan) of the Tarasov Crime Family as well as Iosef Tarasov's father, Abram Tarasov's brother, and an enterprising businessman with questionable roots. He is also the former employer and the arch-nemesis of John Wick (the hero of the film).
The John Wick coins have no fixed dollar value, but their true worth lies in the trust and honor they represent within the mercenary world. The coins are made with real gold and would be worth around $2,000 each based on their gold content, but their value goes beyond monetary exchange.
The tattoo across his back reads "Fortis Fortuna Adiuvat," translated from Latin into, "fortune favors the bold." It is reminiscent of the motto for the 2nd Battalion, 3rd Marines - "Fortes Fortuna Juvat." The meaning is similar. Tattoos with similar slogans are not uncommon in many branches of the armed forces.
Instead, the manager of the Continental gets off five shots at John, causing him to tumult over the edge of the hotel's roof. He hits a slanted roof, a fire escape, and an awning before he hits the concrete below… but evidently Winston knew all along that John could live through it.
