The puppet was designed by Legacy Effects. Actor Adam Pally has stated that showrunner Jon Favreau told him it cost about $5 million to make. It is controlled by two technicians, one who operates the eyes and mouth and another who controls other facial expressions.
The character, however, does share key similarities with Yoda as first seen in The Empire Strikes Back. Like that Yoda, "Baby Yoda" in The Mandalorian is also a puppet, operated by a number of puppeteers who control every movement, gesture and blink.
"We learned how Frank Oz controlled the puppet from inside with his hands, why the face moved the way it did, how the ears had a rubbery vibration, and that helped here as well," Hickel explained to IndieWire.
We don't know much about the origins of baby Yoda five episodes into the series, but we do know mom and dad are nowhere to be seen and he has been left in the care of the Mandalorian for an extended period of time. Does Disney own Baby Yoda?
Baby Yoda (like the terms “Star Wars,” “The Mandalorian,” and “Yoda”) is owned by Disney, and the company has the legal right to enforce its intellectual property and prevent others from profiting off its work.
According to the events of "The Mandalorian" so far, Grogu and Yoda are not the same character. They are simply from the same species. The name of this species has never been revealed since "Star Wars" creator George Lucas wanted to give Yoda a sense of mystery.
