When they met the Wizard, they discovered that he was just a scared little man hiding behind smoke and mirrors to make the inhabitants of Oz fear him. Dorothy (a way home), the Tin Man (a heart), the Scarecrow (a brain), and the Cowardly Lion (courage) already had what they went to the Wizard to get.
Each wants a gift from the great Wizard of Oz. The Scarecrow wants a brain. When he finally gets one, he pronounces .... "The sum of the square roots of any two sides of an isosceles triangle is equal to the square root of the remaining side."
The Scarecrow shows that he has a brain by having the idea for the Tin Woodsman to chop down a tree to make a bridge, the Lion calling it “a first rate idea” making one suspect “[he] had brains in [his] head, instead of straw.” (Page 81).
The Tin Man did not have a heart because he was turned into a living statue made of tin by the Wicked Witch of the East, who cast a spell on him that took away his ability to feel emotions.

Did the Tin Man want a heart or brain?
On the long journey to the Emerald City, Dorothy and Toto are joined by the Scarecrow, who wishes he had brains; the Tin Woodman, who longs for a heart; and the Cowardly Lion, who seeks courage.
Once, indeed, the Tin Woodman stepped upon a beetle that was crawling along the road, and killed the poor little thing. This made the Tin Woodman very unhappy, for he was always careful not to hurt any living creature; and as he walked along he wept several tears of sorrow and regret.
Crane was obsessed with human fear and realized he could gain power if he could control it. He then invented a fear-inducing chemical that douses his victims with crippling anxiety before becoming the professional criminal known as the Scarecrow.
In Batman Begins, Scarecrow's mask is a means of inflicting pain—the mouth is the only definable feature in the patchy sack he wears to terrify his patients. When he sprays Batman with his fear toxin, bats claw their way through the wire mouthpiece in the mask, distorting his mouth.

We're no shrinks, but it seems like Dorothy could be suffering from HPD, a disorder that manifests itself through attention-seeking behavior, intense theatricality, and a shallow array of emotions.
What does the Cowardly Lion represent in The Wizard of Oz?
the Cowardly Lion represented northern reformers; the Emerald City represented Wall Street, greenback colored; and. the Wizard represented the Money Power, whose influence rests on manipulation and illusion.
Baum does not present Oz as some figment of Dorothy's imagination, but as a real place (one to which, a few books later, Dorothy, Aunt Em and Uncle Henry will move) – and this accounts for a dozen or so sequels.
Dorothy will miss the Scarecrow the most because the Scarecrow joined Dorothy from almost the start of her trip. In essence, he was her FIRST friend in a scary strange land.
Without a heart, the Tin Woodman felt he could no longer love Nimmie Amee and he left her. Dorothy and the Scarecrow found him after he had rusted in the forest (an event related in The Wonderful Wizard of Oz) and went with him to the Emerald City where the Wizard gave him a heart.

The Wicked Witch of the West is very scary – she is green, ugly and very mean. She cackles and threatens to kill Dorothy. The trees in the forest have faces and talk. The forest is dark and creepy with screeching owls– Dorothy is afraid of meeting wild animals.
Dorothy slaps him for trying to attack Toto and discovers that the Lion is a coward as he admits that he is not brave or king of the forest, but a cowardly lion. Dorothy feels sorry for the lion and tells him about the Wizard in the Emerald City and maybe he could give the lion some courage.
