Loki appeared to die no less than three times over the course of his six appearances in the MCU, starting with his falling into a wormhole in Thor, continuing with his faked death in Thor: The Dark World, and finally his actual death (so it would seem) at Thanos' hands in the beginning of Avengers: Infinity War.

Like in all comics (and even films) Loki didn't stay dead. But, the fact Thor broke his father's rule to kill his brother emphasizes just how powerful the moment was. Thor killed Loki because he had no other choice - he couldn't sit by as his brother killed innocent bystanders (and people Eric deeply cared about).

With Kid Loki's affinity for blades, it's possible Thor died due to a prank gone wrong, signaling the TVA to arrest the young God of Mischief for Thor's murder.
