Dory and Marlin are best friends. Dory met Marlin when he was searching for his son, Nemo. Though sometimes Marlin can get irritated by Dory's short-term memory loss, they are still best friends. In the sequel, Marlin helped Dory to find her parents, Jenny and Charlie.
Marlin was short with forgetful Dory at first, but the two quickly relied on each other. Dory's memory wouldn't have gotten better without Marlin and Marlin wouldn't have found his son without Dory. Because of their journey, these two had some of the best quotes and are one of Disney's best friendships.
In one exhibit, Dory encounters her childhood friend Destiny, a nearsighted whale shark who used to communicate with Dory through pipes, and Bailey, a beluga whale who mistakenly believes he has lost his ability to echolocate.

However, in this post, I will make no such argument. The pairing I bring up here is Marlin and Dory. I want to be clear that I do not view them as a romantic couple.

The character Dory from Finding Nemo has a memory problem. Poor Dory has a hard time remembering anything. She forgets who her family is and what has happened in her life. In just a couple of minutes, she forgets the things that her friends say to her.
Nemo's disability, visually defined by his unique fin, affects, yet does not dictate his daily life, and initiates moments of joy and self-discovery. "Finding Nemo" becomes an act of rescue, maturation, and acceptance of self and others for all the characters.
Nemo is a boy at the moment. He's referred to repeatedly as 'son' in the film, and clownfish start out their lives as male anyway. He may at some point in his life turn female - clownfish start out as male and then can turn female as conditions require - but that's not shown in the scope of the movies.
