Irene, who has yet to take her vows, is chosen due to her proclivity for visions — a gift from her mother. If I'm honest, Father Burke is just kinda there. During the film he tends to just get himself into dangerous situations and does one important act near the epic conclusion.
Irene uses the relic against Maurice, but he grabs it, causing Valak to appear. Similar to Father Noiret, Valak lifts Irene in the air and sets her ablaze. Irene does not burn as Valak realizes she is a descendant of St. Lucy, able to harness the same power associated with the relic.

Her acting was terrible (what year is it?), she didn't fit with anything, and I am betting the character of Debra was added in rewrites to satisfy the “diversity” requirements, which took away screen time from every other character including Taissa Farmiga who is fantastic. It's 1956.

Fans hoping to see Father Burke attempting a new exorcism will be disappointed to hear he's not in The Nun 2. Father Burke was a Vatican specialist in exorcisms and supernatural phenomena. In The Nun, he investigated the mysterious suicide of a nun in Romania along with Sister Irene.
That never seemed to make total sense given what has been established about Lorraine in the series. However, The Nun 2 has now confirmed that even though they're not the same person, the two characters are related.
