Xavier Samuel portrays Charlie Chaplin Jr., or “Cass” as he goes by in the film. Cass and Eddy get involved in a threesome relationship with Marilyn Monroe. In real life, Monroe did have a relationship with Chaplin Jr., but not at the same time as Eddy.

Cass would sign each letter with “Your tearful father,” which allowed de Armas' Marilyn Monroe to hold on to the hope that he would return and be a part of her life. Cass' actions are cruel, but he might have written to her because he knew she felt a void in her life due to her father's absence.
The box contains a memento from her childhood and a letter which reads, “There never was a Tearful father,” suggesting all those letters she received from her “father” were from him. Monroe is heartbroken, and the film then shows her taking an overdose of pills, after which she dies.
