After Johnny's death, Dally doesn't know how to live anymore. He cared for Johnny more than the rest of his family with the Greasers. Unable to cope, Dally robs a store and aims an unloaded gun at the police, and forces them to kill him.
Dally pulls out the unloaded gun he carries, and the police shoot him. Dally collapses to the ground, dead. Ponyboy muses that Dally wanted to die. Feeling dizzy and overwhelmed, Ponyboy passes out.
He took action without thinking through the consequences, driven by his own trauma and anger at the Socs for hurting his friend. Later, he regretted his actions, but by then, the deed had been done.
Darry tells Randy that Ponyboy is racked up physically and so emotionally stressed that he doesn't remember what really happened and that's why he thinks he killed Bob. Pony pretends he killed Bob and that Johnny isn't dead because he figured it wouldn't hurt as much.

Dally did rob a grocery store and take the police on a chase that ended in his being shot. However, earlier in the book, Dally had risked going to jail himself in order to help Johnny and Pony when they were fleeing from the law. And Dally did save Pony from certain death by pulling him out of the burning church.
Johnnyboy. Johnny can count on his friends in his gang. But not on much else, besides having a crush on his best friend Ponyboy, who has no idea of Johnny's feelings. At least he knows what to expect when his friends have a different idea of what crushes should be like.
Johnny has been beaten by his father and emotionally abused by his mother throughout his childhood and adolescence. Because of this, the gang is protective of Johnny, treating him like their younger brother or their "pet."
As a result of frustration and fear for Pony's safety, Darry had slapped him when he returned home well after curfew. This slap did make Pony run away, thus in Ponyboy's mind starting this whole nightmare: "I bet Darry's sorry he ever hit me."
In Chapter Four, David, a Soc, was drowning Ponyboy. David held Ponyboy's head underwater in the direction of Bob who was angry with Ponyboy for hitting on his girlfriend.
After Johnny stabs and kills Bob Sheldon in self-defense, he runs away with Ponyboy and the two boys become close friends during their time spent hiding out in an abandoned church on Jay Mountain.
While he is there, the church catches fire and Johnny and Ponyboy go inside to rescue children who are trapped. Dally tries to save Ponyboy and Johnny when the roof starts to collapse, and he gets a bad burn on his arm.

Dally is shot by police after robbing a grocery store with an unloaded gun. He is cornered by the police, and raises the gun at them. They shoot and kill him.
Why was Johnny's dying so difficult for Dally to handle? The boys in the gang have no one else to depend upon and who cares about them but each other. Dally has always watched out for Johnny in fights, and when Johnny dies, Dally feels he has nothing left that's good in his life.
