In The Hunger Games series, Katniss killing President Coin instead of President Snow surprised many. Still, it was because Coin was revealed to be a ruthless leader with her own political interests.
By killing Coin, Katniss ensured a chance for a peaceful and fair country, avenged her sister's death, and liberated Panem from the fascist government. The Hunger Games franchise is still an iconic series of books and movies, with the latter truly cementing the property as an international phenomenon.
Then she remembers their earlier agreement, that they promised not to lie to each other, and she shoots Coin with her arrow instead, killing the new president of Panem. Katniss is quickly taken to her old Training Center room where she waits for a death sentence.
Why does Snow laugh in this moment of shock and confusion? He knows that he's still going to meet his demise as well, but the twist appears to give him a great deal of satisfaction.

What did Peeta take from Katniss after she killed Coin?
In the aftermath of killing Coin, Katniss tries to take her nightlock pill but Peeta stops her, a parallel and inversion of their attempted “suicide” in the first book.
Katniss searches his eyes for signs of emotion but only finds amusement in them. She remembers that they did indeed promise not to lie to each other anymore, and she realizes that Snow wasn't lying to her about Coin's role in the parachute bombing.
Answer and Explanation: Prim is killed by a bomb at the very end of the battle. Alma Coin sees an opportunity to turn the Capitol troops against Snow, and she decides the resulting loss of life from her plan is a worthwhile price to pay.
Even though Katniss didn't kill President Snow, the public killed him in the confusion of the aftermath of President Coin's death. This led to the deaths of both ruthless leaders by the end of the series.
This comes as a result of Lucy attempting to leave Snow during a rainstorm after they plot to flee the Districts, but she learns that he was responsible for killing Sejanus Plinth during the travels.
Peeta, Annie, and Beetee vote no, while Johanna and Enobaria vote yes. After some thought, Katniss demands to kill Snow. Once she receives an agreement, she votes yes, for Prim. Realizing something is up (as Katniss would never do that), Haymitch votes yes, too.
This interaction was so surprising to fans because it's not in the books at all. While, throughout the series, there's some chemistry between the two, nothing ever comes of the tension in Suzanne Collins' novels. Beyond the kiss, nothing happened between the two in the movies either.
Snow can't stand to see a young woman betray a young man's affection—his view of what happened 65 years ago. And so he takes out his old, festering wound on Katniss.
Before the Capitol battle, Gale had explained to Katniss his series of bombs designed to feed off human compassion: a small bomb would go off, and then when medical aid rushed in, a second bomb would go off, killing those people as well. Incidentally, it's this exact type of bomb that took Prim's life.
Katniss speculates that Coin deliberately sent Prim to die in the Capitol bombing in order to fully gain her trust, but it's never outright confirmed or denied.
She expected their years of friendship would make it harder to kill. But she knows her one and only true ally is Peeta, so she decides she must kill Finnick now. Katniss climbs down from the tree, determined to kill him now before he has the chance to kill her.

Katniss is acquitted of murder by reason of insanity and sent home to District 12, while her mother leaves for District 4 and Gale for District 2. Other District 12 natives later return, including Peeta, who has recovered his memories and his love for Katniss.
Gale and Katniss did not see each alone until a few weeks after the end of the Hunger Games, at their meeting place in the woods. They shared an emotional reunion. At the end of a day of hunting, Gale spontaneously kissed Katniss and told her that he “had to do that, at least once.”
The bottom line is that we do not know exactly what happened to Lucy Gray Baird. The movie leaves her fate ambiguous, matching the ending of her fate in the book.
Thereby, Peeta would have been a valuable tool to the revolution. Peeta was unlikely to be a competitor for Power and was somewhat more controllable/predictable than Katniss: Throughout the Mockingjay, Coin saw Katniss as a threat and spent her time sending her to her death.
