Prim tried to stop Katniss since she knew she would most likely not survive the horror of the Games; but Gale Hawthorne held her back. Katniss' bravery was strong in this part. Gale taking Prim away at the reaping.
As Prim walks up to the stage, Katniss, in a panic, rushes forward and shouts that she is volunteering as tribute. A volunteer is allowed to take the place of the person whose name is drawn, but this never happens in District 12. Katniss and Prim embrace, and Gale has to pull Prim away from Katniss.
Prim is randomly selected as the girl tribute that is supposed to fight in the Hunger Games. However, when her name is called, Katniss volunteers as tribute in her place, saving her sister's life. Before Prim is selected, we only see a glimpse into her life through the eyes of her sister.

Who betrayed Katniss?
Katniss feels betrayed, most of all by Haymitch, who used her and Peeta. Eventually she wakes to find Gale there. He's badly injured and tells her the Capitol bombed District 12 after the Games. He got Prim and Katniss's mother out in time, but the District 12 is gone.
Answer and Explanation: Prim is killed by a bomb at the very end of the battle. Alma Coin sees an opportunity to turn the Capitol troops against Snow, and she decides the resulting loss of life from her plan is a worthwhile price to pay.
The families of victors can be used as leverage to force them to bend to the Capitol's will. Katniss also mentioned that the children of victors are reaped to participate in the Hunger Games suspiciously often.
Prim's cat is named Buttercup. He is a ragged-looking yellow cat with a surly disposition, except when it comes to Prim. Buttercup adores Prim because she rescued him and nursed him back to health. Through Prim's connection with Buttercup, Collins establishes the young girl's caring nature early in the novel.
Similarly, past victors of the Hunger Games, even if they are still of reaping age, are exempt from further reapings. Once of age at twelve years old, a potential tribute's name was entered into the reaping one time.
In the end, Katniss and Gale grew apart, as many childhood friends and young loves do. She needed something different in her life, and with Gale's link to Primrose's death, Katniss found a reason to cut ties. If Katniss ever wanted to find comfort again, she knew she had to return to Peeta for the long term.
Katniss, meanwhile, is four years older and very protective of Prim, and so without hesitation she volunteers to take her sister's place. Moreover, she has years of experience hunting (and therefore killing) and is far less sensitive than her sister, making her more likely to survive the ordeal of the Games.
She was only 13 years old when she was killed in The Hunger Games: Mockingjay, and her youth only makes the tragedy that much harder for Katniss to bear after everything else she had suffered. Prim's death is a truly heartbreaking moment.
Katniss has a conflicted relationship with her mother. Following her father's death, her mother fell into deep depression and now rarely speaks. As a result, Katniss has a difficult time feeling love and affection for her mother, even as she recognizes that her mother is a kind and intelligent woman.

Her third kill occurs at the end of the Games. First, she shoots Cato in the hand so he will release Peeta. Cato falls off the Cornucopia and is attacked by the mutts. Once Katniss realizes that the dogs intend to draw out Cato's death, she uses her final arrow to kill Cato in an act of mercy.
Years before the trilogy, Buttercup was found by Prim as a kitten. Katniss described him as "scrawny... [his] belly swollen with worms, [and] crawling with fleas." Katniss was averse to adopting him because it was another mouth to feed.
Prim's cat, Buttercup, is a symbol of survival and a parallel to Katniss herself. Buttercup, though unfriendly, survives again and again, much like Katniss. He is not a particularly affectionate or attractive cat, but Prim loves and protects him, and that is enough to make Buttercup loyal and loving to Prim.
Katniss purchased that goat after Rooba came by and said that she, in fact, didn't want the goat; then she winked at Katniss. Together, Katniss and Gale deliver the goat to Prim who was all too excited to care for it.
All Gale wants is to keep his family and those close to him safe. By the time he was 18 (the same year "The Hunger Games" takes place), he had put his name into the Reaping 42 times in order to gain extra food for his family and reduce the chance of his three younger siblings being chosen as a District 12 tribute.
Finnick Odair was a male victor from District 4 and the winner of the 65th Hunger Games, making him the youngest Victor ever. Ten years later, he was reaped into the Third Quarter Quell, of which he was one of the survivors.
The 72nd Hunger Games was known for being one of the best known Hunger Games in the history of Panem. It was also the first Games where Seneca Crane was Head Gamemaker. Art Solace was crowned as the victor of the 72nd Hunger Games. Art scored a 8 in his Training session.
Prim was among the medics who arrived to treat the victims. Unfortunately, a second batch of bombs were set off, with Prim being killed in the explosions.
Even if Gale didn't intend to murder Prim specifically, he certainly intended to murder somebody. The two-phase bombs that he and Beetee invented were very clearly made with the intent of targeting medics and other civilians trying to save those wounded during the first phase of bombing.
Gale was responsible for creating weapons that would trigger a second wave of bombs to target first responders and combat healers. This invention potentially ended up killing Prim, but even if he wasn't directly responsible, Katniss found this tactic so abhorrent that she lost her affection for him.
