Rue, the girl tribute from District 11, is small and reminds Katniss of Prim. Rue is able to hop from tree to tree like a squirrel, a skill that helps her outrun and evade her competition.
Katniss described her as "birdlike" and after the Games, she could barely look at Prim without noticing Rue in her and being reminded of her death. Small, quick, intelligent, and young, the two had many similarities, which led Katniss to make Rue her ally.
Katniss wore the pin as her token in both the 74th and 75th Hunger Games, to represent District 12 and remind her of home. For Katniss herself, the birds are a reminder of her father, and later of Rue.
Gale says he wants to stay and join the rebellion, and try to start one in District 12. Katniss wants to run away and start a new life in the wild before the Capitol can kill them. Gale asks her to consider the families who can't run away, and tells her it isn't about saving only themselves.

By then, they had gone through two games together. To Katniss, there was no one other than Peeta who could truly understand her nightmares and could protect her and soothe her. Losing Peeta made her see what she had failed to see.
Katniss's focus on survival and her family's safety prevented her from fully considering romance, but her feelings for Peeta and Gale diverged in the end. Katniss ultimately chose Peeta because he understood her trauma and she didn't want to lose him, proving her love for him.

When her husband dies in a mining accident, however, she falls into a daze, unable to work and take care of her children. As a result, Katniss is forced to grow up quickly to support the family and can never bring herself to fully trust her mother again.
