Once the games begin, Peeta forms alliances with the Careers, which Katniss does not initially realize is part of his plot to protect her. After Peeta tells Katniss to run from Cato, Cato stabs Peeta in the thigh and leaves him for dead. Peeta lives, disguising himself as a rock, but suffers from blood poisoning.
Peeta urges Katniss to run and stays to fight fellow tribute Cato while she escapes. He survives the encounter with Cato but suffers a stab wound on his leg. He camouflages himself into the rocks and mud alongside a riverbank, slowly dying of blood poisoning until Katniss finds him days later.
SPOILERS!!!!! In the end of the first book peeta had his leg cut by cato but then when he hid he covered himself with mud and stuff to camouflage and it got hella infected but Katniss found him and took care of him but then his leg got torn up by mutts yada yada yada blah blah blah we already knew this.
You wouldn't have guessed it from the way the film made it appear; however, Peeta's injury was much worse than you thought. It was so bad, the Capitol deemed his leg unsaleable, hacked it off and replaced it with an artificial one. When Caesar asks Peeta how his new leg is working out.
In the film, Peeta gets away with his leg wound. In the book, the injury is so serious that the leg had to be amputated and replaced with an artificial one.
Katniss is rendered deaf in one ear after she blows up the Careers' supplies, and she doesn't regain any hearing on her left side until afterwards when the Capitol gives her a hearing aid.
Katniss rarely sings because it reminds her of her father, but she now remembers a morbid song that her father taught her: “The Hanging Tree.” This moment in the story is significant in multiple ways.
I went on the CGI diet, computer-generated images. They just sucked my face down in post-production. There you have it, folks. With the move of a mouse and a stylus, our Peeta was shrunk down via computer cleanse, not juice cleanse.
As she approaches him, Peeta wraps his hands around her neck and throws Katniss around the room. He begins to strangle her, nearly killing her. He is wild, unable to be stopped, at least until Boggs knocks him out with a metal tray.
She finds out, too, that Peeta lost his leg and gets her first look at his prosthetic. Caesar, as expected, asks Katniss about the berries, and she struggles to get the right words out, but, afterward, Haymitch says she was perfect. Katniss, Peeta, Effie, and Haymitch board the train to go home.
However, after Mrs. Mellark reentered the bakery, Katniss witnessed her scolding and beating Peeta after he burnt two loaves of bread and telling him to feed them to the pigs just before disappearing to help a customer. She was not supportive of Peeta when his name was drawn to compete in the 74th Hunger Games.
Peeta, after weeks of treatment (he was presumably in the Capitol for about five to six weeks total), was still able to resist the effects. He warned Katniss Everdeen of the Capitol's plans to attack her, even though his memories about her had been hijacked. Only a short time later, his hijacking had been completed.
The female Morphling, however, appears almost coincidentally, and Peeta even mentions that they don't know her real name. Given that she is willing to make the ultimate sacrifice to protect Peeta, it's safe to assume that the Morphling was committed to the rebel cause.
Cato sees his victory in the Hunger Games as the correct and natural outcome – after all, he's been preparing his whole life, and tributes from Districts 1 and 2 are most likely to be winners. But Katniss's high score in training, uncommon for District 12 tributes, earns Cato's attention and ire.
What does he mean by this? It means that during the arena, during his killing spree, he realizes that there's more to life than killing, and he's just a pawn in the whole scheme of things. He realizes that he's a cruel person the capitol created, and he wouldn't mind dying because he wasn't alive on the inside anyways.
It took time for Peeta to break out of that conditioning, and even when the possibility existed that Peeta could be a danger to Katniss, the two of them still elected to be together and build a future in a post-Hunger-Games world. Their love for one another is evident.
Katniss here's this and understands that even though she may not love Peeta (then) that it's one less person who has to die. (At least that's what I have always thought.) Katniss realizes that if she pretends to be in love with Peeta people will want the capitol to let them survive.
While a prisoner of the Capitol, Peeta was hijacked into believing that Katniss was not human, but in fact one of the Capitol's mutts. Conversely, Johanna Mason suggested that the Capitol's torture replaced Peeta with an "evil-mutt version" of himself. This sentiment was later echoed by Katniss.
He has betrayed her and is betraying all of District 12 by buddying up with the Careers, whom she calls the "Capitol's lapdogs." She decides that if the Careers don't kill him, she'd be more than happy to. Then, she wonders why Peeta hasn't told them about her bow and arrow skills yet.
For Peeta to look like he was tortured, many think he went on an extreme diet. But in reality, they used CGI to slim his face and make him look abused and beaten.
Johanna clarifies, stating that Peeta has turned into his evil mutt identity given the way he verbally attacks Finnick and Katniss. Gale even sees a bit of himself in how Peeta acts and speaks.
Peeta thanks Katniss for finding him and she says that he would have done the same. He talks about what Katniss should do if he doesn't make it back. She's worried that he might die, and to keep him from speaking of such things, she kisses him.
How Katniss Deals with Her PTSD. It's no surprise that Katniss becomes traumatized—after all, the Hunger Games are the perfect breeding ground for PTSD. Severe, life-threatening, interpersonal violence as well as witnessing atrocities and killing enemies in combat are particular risk factors for the disorder.
Snow can't stand to see a young woman betray a young man's affection—his view of what happened 65 years ago. And so he takes out his old, festering wound on Katniss.
