In 34 ABY, the astromech droid BB-8 was caught in a net on Teedo's luggabeast, leading fellow scavenger Rey to free the droid. The next morning, Teedo and two other bandits attempted to steal BB-8 from Rey as they left her home for Niima Outpost.
Poe gave BB-8 the map revealing the whereabouts to Luke Skywalker before the pilot was captured by the First Order. The droid was also taken hostage on Jakku by a scavenger before being rescued by Rey. BB-8 then stood by Rey's side, trusting her for the duration of the trilogy.

While they may not have had romantic love for each other, they became close enough that Rey would miss him after his death. The kiss at the end of The Rise of Skywalker was a goodbye to a friend who would be dearly missed.
