Scream is no stranger to pairing its lead characters together in romantic relationships, as the original 1996 film established a love connection between Dewey Riley and Gale Weathers early on.
Arquette as his character Dewey Riley on the set of Scream 4. Dwight "Dewey" Riley is the Deputy Sheriff of Woodsboro, the brother of Tatum Riley and friend of Sidney Prescott. After a series of murders, he helps lead the investigation, while pursuing a romance with Gale Weathers.
Their relationship becomes more solidified after run-ins with the killer in Scream 3, which ends with Dewey and Gale getting engaged. When the characters return 11 years later in Scream 4, Dewey and Gale are married but clearly on the rocks, and never fully reconcile before the end of the movie.
However, that move proves to strain their marriage as Dewey doesn't adjust well to city life. During one of the pair's more emotional arguments in 2022's Scream, fans learn that Dewey moved back to Woodsboro after living there for two months. Gale, of course, stayed to continue her revived career.
Gale is still a career-driven woman in Scream 2, having written another book about what happened to her in Woodsboro. Throughout the franchise, she evolves, while staying true to herself. Gale finds love in Dewey and gets married.
However, during the events of the film, their romantic liaison strengthens even further, as Dewey saves Gale's life. He proposes to her at the end of the film. The fourth film, set in 2011, reveals they are a married couple of ten years, indicating that they got married in 2001.
Gale does not marry anyone in The Hunger Games. He and Katniss talk about running away together and starting a new life in the wilderness, but they never officially marry.
In a surprise twist in “Scream 5,” Dewey is done in by Ghostface. It takes place in a hospital after Dewey rescues the new protagonist, Tara Carpenter (Jenna Ortega). While Dewey has come close to death in the other movies, fans were shocked to see him finished off.
Judy briefly had close romantic feelings for Dewey, which was obvious to those around her. She resented Gale for the way she treated Dewey and her resentment towards their small town life.
To make the impact effective, the film needed to sacrifice its legacy character, who died in the line of duty facing Ghostface, which circles back to Dewey's role since 1996's Scream. Scream also showed that anyone could die to challenge the implications of the central characters being immortal to Ghostface.
Dewey is one of those characters who's always willing to put his life on the line for others, and the team felt it was a necessary sacrifice in order for the franchise to move forward.
The first Ghostface attack against Tara Carpenter (Jenna Ortega), which kicks off Scream 2022, takes place 25 years after the original Woodsboro Ghostface murders. Sidney Prescott is now 42 years old, Gale Weathers is 57, and Dewey Riley is murdered at the age of 50 years old.

Scream 6's Sam Carpenter is the daughter of Billy Loomis, but Sam and her sister Tara's mother may have also appeared in the original Scream film. In the first Scream, Neve Campbell starred as Sidney Prescott, a high school student coping with the death of her mother and being taunted by a Ghostface killer.

Marley Shelton reprises her role as Scream 4 character Judy Hicks in the new Scream, but with some noticeable changes now over ten years later. She's now the Sheriff of Woodsboro and also happens to be the mother of a teen son, Wes (Dylan Minnette).
Scream VI has been released – but, sadly for fans, it's the first one without Neve Campbell. Campbell, who had played Sidney Prescott in every Scream film to date, announced in June 2021 she had quit the sixth instalment as she wasn't getting paid what she thought she deserved.
