The boys live in a place called the Glade, a courtyard which is surrounded by an enormous labyrinth of 100-foot stone walls called the Maze. Alby, a dark-skinned boy who has been there the longest, is the leader, and his sidekick is a blond boy named Newt.
Alby. The leader of the Gladers. As the oldest Glader and one of the first group to arrive, Alby has more experience than the other boys. His attempts to maintain order at all costs often portray him as mean or harsh, though he sometimes jokes and allows himself to be vulnerable.
How long has Newt been in the glade? In the books he got sent to the Glade in the first group and spent two years there. In the movies he got sent to the Glade pretty early on (I think he was the second person there, after Alby), so he would have been there for three years.
Kathryn In the book it answers that. It has like 1 sentence explaining that there was a group of boys sent up at the start then 1 a month after that. In the movie however it changed that and said alby was the first and that he had to spend a month alone in the glade. Hope this explains it.

Thomas tells the Keepers that he and Teresa were manipulated into designing the Maze because they share the gift of telepathy. He convinces the others that he and Teresa are now in as much danger as them, but he knows the way out. Thomas tells them in order to escape, they have to jump through the Griever Hole.
Newt is approached by Thomas on a rooftop and shows him his infection, as shown by the black veins on his right arm. Newt explains that the reason WCKD put him in the Maze was because they wanted to tell the difference between immunes like Thomas and people like himself.
