The Basilisk actually killed one girl by the name of Myrtle Warren. In 1993, Riddle opened the Chamber again, through the use of one of his seven Horcruxes. Using the bit of his soul encompassed by the diary, he took partial control of Ginny Weasley.
Myrtle Warren, a.k.a “Moaning Myrtle” allegedly died by looking into the Basilisk's eyes, but it's actually possible that she too was only petrified. Myrtle saw the Basilisk through her glasses, which could technically make her view indirect, leaving her petrified.
Riddle unleashed the Basilisk on the school, with his goal of ridding the school of all of its Muggle-borns. All the victims were merely Petrified, except for a student named Myrtle Warren.

How did Hermione avoid getting killed by the Basilisk?

Petrification is the process of being turned to stone. The only proven causes of petrification are the gaze of the Gorgon and the Basilisk, the latter only when reflected in or seen through another object. However, there may be a Dark spell that does the same.

This would mean that the basilisk was not only a Horcrux but as near to being Slytherin himself as anything could be. As Salazar Slytherin's direct descendent, Tom Riddle could also use the connection to the Hogwarts founder's soul to control the basilisk, while other Parseltongues could not.
Of course, at that moment, Harry Potter didn't know there was a piece of Voldemort's soul in him, so he wouldn't have even tried to communicate with the Basilisk, but had he tried and succeeded at it, Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets would have ended very differently.
