The sinking of the Titanic claimed some 1,500 lives, among them a gallery of early 20th-century A-list celebrities. Captains of industry John Jacob Astor IV and Benjamin Guggenheim both went down with the ship, as did Macy's co-owner Isidor Straus and his wife, Ida, who refused to leave his side.
Later life. Though cleared of blame by the official British inquiry, Ismay never recovered from the Titanic disaster. Already emotionally repressed and insecure before his voyage on Titanic, the tragedy sent him into a state of deep depression from which he never truly emerged. He kept a low profile afterwards.
From the beginning, some blamed the Titanic's skipper, Captain E.J. Smith, for sailing the massive ship at such a high speed (22 knots) through the iceberg-heavy waters of the North Atlantic. Some believed Smith was trying to better the crossing time of Titanic's White Star sister ship, the Olympic.

In researching his genealogy he has connected with distant cousins who descended from his grandmother Evelyn Kearney Connors side of the family. It was her sister, Edna Kearney Murray who survived the sinking of the Titanic but it wasn't in an overloaded lifeboat.
American and British inquiries accused the SS Californian and its captain, Stanley Lord, of abandoning the Titanic. Decades later, the discovery of Titanic's wreck exonerated Lord and the Californian's role in the disaster, re-opening accounts that implicate another ship.
1. Icebergs – the ultimate hazard. The poor navigation of icebergs is undoubtedly the most well-known and momentous of mistakes that caused the sinking of the Titanic. Indeed, the collision between the Titanic and an iceberg – on 14 April 1912 at 11:40pm – is what caused the tragedy.
Did the Captain of the Titanic die? Captain Smith did indeed perish when the Titanic sank. Some survivors reported seeing him inside the wheelhouse of the bridge as Titanic sank, whilst others claim to have seen Smith commit suicide using a pistol. No reliable account exists, however.

Of its total 2,240 passengers and crew, only 706 people survived the Titanic, says History.com. After the Titanic first hit the iceberg, there was "a largely disorganized and haphazard evacuation."Some lifeboats were not used to full capacity and procedures for boarding them were not orderly.
There are fears that during retrieval, the Titanic wreck would disintegrate into pieces, making it impossible to have something concrete by the time the remains reach the sea surface. There are documented reports that metal-eating bacteria has already consumed most of Titanic's wreckage.
The sinking would condemn more than 1,500 to die in the frigid North Atlantic, but someone conspicuously not among the dead that night was the ship's chief baker Charles Joughin, who survived history's worst maritime disaster by getting incredibly soused.
Meanwhile, the closest ship, Californian, didn't receive Titanic's distress calls at all. Its wireless operator had switched off his receiver and gone to bed after Phillips told him to shut up. Amateur radio operators also interfered with messages, making it difficult for Titanic to communicate.

The lack of sufficient lifeboats was chief among the reasons cited for the enormous loss of life. While complying with international maritime regulations (Titanic carried more than the minimum number of lifeboats required), there were still not enough spaces for most passengers to escape the sinking ship.
On April 14, after four days at sea the Titanic collided with a jagged iceberg at 11:40 p.m. Because it was dark that night, and the lookouts in the crow's nest didn't have binoculars with them since they were locked up, they didn't see the iceberg until it was too late.
It is this final act of leadership that has become the most enduring image of Captain Smith. While we cannot know for sure how he spent his final moments, it is known that Captain Edward Smith perished in the North Atlantic along with 1517 others on April 15, 1912. His body was never recovered.
"As the waters rose to the bridge, his last command rang out to his officers and men: 'Be British'," the Rev Gordon told the mourners at Shelton church. "When next seen he is holding a little child in his arms, and handing it into one of the boats, saved. His last greeting was, 'Good luck, and God bless you. '
According to Mr. Cooper, the author of a book on Captain Smith, Smith was not ignoring the ice warnings; he was simply not reacting to them. Ice warnings were just warnings that a ship sent saying that they had seen ice at a certain location (Kasprzak, 2012).
At 10:15 pm, the ship finally sank about 23 nautical miles off the coast of Pomerania, taking 9,400 people with it, many of which were women and children. In terms of the number of lives lost, the sinking of the Wilhelm Gustloff remains to this day the worst maritime disaster in human history.
When the collision occured the order was quickly given for women and children to be placed in the lifeboats, despite this 61 children died in the Titanic disaster: one first class child passenger, two second class, and an astonishing fifty-seven third class. Both child crew members were lost.
Almost all of those who jumped or fell into the sea drowned or died within minutes due to the effects of cold shock and incapacitation. RMS Carpathia arrived about an hour and a half after the sinking and rescued all of the 710 survivors by 09:15 on 15 April, some nine and a half hours after the collision.
Because Steward Brown's account of Smith giving orders before walking onto the bridge was the last reliable sighting, this would make Smith's last words simply: "Well, boys, do your best for the women and children, and look out for yourselves."
