In “The Fangs of Freedom,” Elsa was entertaining a relationship (and marriage) to cowboy Ennis (Eric Nelsen) — who was on board if she's pregnant after they had sex for the first time and even stood up to her father, James (Tim McGraw), who was none-too-pleased with the turn of events.
Along the trail, she fell in love with a cowboy, Ennis, and the two planned to marry before Ennis was shot by a group of bandits. Later, Elsa became entangled with Sam, a Comanche warrior who saved her life on the trail.
1883 is a story of tragedy and violence, but also of family and love. Along the Dutton family's journey, a classic boy-meets-girl love affair unfolds between Elsa Dutton and cowboy Ennis, who was hired on to assist with wrangling wild cattle.
During the journey north, she became acquainted with a cowboy named Ennis, who she began to admire. She grew fond of him and their romance bloomed until there was a shootout with some bandits, resulting in Ennis's death.

Not long after Elsa (Isabel May) received assurances from her beloved Ennis (Eric Nelsen) that he would marry her, tragedy struck their wagon train: a gunfight with some marauding bandits took away the man who took Elsa's virginity. That's right: Ennis the cow herder is dead!
In Comancheria, the settlers pay a tax to the Comanche to cross their land. One of the Comanche introduces himself to Elsa as Sam, a name he took from the man who killed his wife. The two race their horses; Elsa wins and Sam nicknames her "Lightning With The Yellow Hair".

The theory has been circulating online for years, and while it continues to make the rounds to this day, there isn't enough evidence to support it.
Elsa was also planning to split from the group to stay with Sam, but after many goodbyes, everyone decided they were going to Oregon anyway. Even Elsa decided to leave her boyfriend so she could find out where Oregon was, while planning to return to the plains in June to reunite with him.
Elsa was the main narrator of 1883 and appeared via voiceover in the first episode of 1923 as well. James and Margaret also had two sons: John and Spencer.
In a stunning twist, Elsa decides that she will not make the rest of the journey to Oregon, opting to stay with Sam, marry him and make a life together. It's a decision that garners a great deal of pushback from James and especially Margaret (Faith Hill), who is not ready to relinquish control over her daughter yet.
The next morning, she awakes to a beaded vest and necklace on the bedroll next to her. Lightning With the Yellow Hair puts on both, then mounts her horse and takes Sam's hand. They make plans to meet at that spot in June. As they kiss and part, she screams his name and then yells “I love you!” in Comanche.
