Edward can typically hear people's detailed thoughts, but in "Midnight Sun," he says Charlie's thoughts are always a bit shielded. This might also explain where Bella gets her mind powers from and why Edward can't read her thoughts either.
At the end of Breaking Dawn, Bella removes her shield to allow Edward to read her mind. She describes this as being much more difficult than pushing it out, as it struggles to protect her and it takes all of her concentration to make it disappear altogether.
Edward reads Renesmee's mind. Edward hears inappropriate thoughts from Mike Newton about Bella and discovers Jacob's appearance using mind reading to pick up his mind.

What are Renesmee's powers?
Just by Renesmee's touch she can make people see her thoughts or what she wants people to see, she is also able to break through mental shields. Renesmee has the opposite powers of her parents because her father can read the minds of others and her mother is a shield that she can project outwards.
Rosalie is annoyed and jealous of Bella partly because Edward finds her attractive. "Twilight" shows fans Rosalie's annoyance with Bella but doesn't really explain some of the reasoning behind it until the sequel. She doesn't understand Bella's desire to be a vampire when Rosalie wishes she could be human again.

Edward had a theory that Bella's overwhelmingly appealing blood may be derived from a mixture of her parents'—Renée's being far too sweet and Charlie's being moderate—together, giving her blood a more powerful appeal. Then Jasper, while to an extent he may or may not affect the body itself when manipulating emotions, he's still affecting the emotions themselves, but not any thoughts attached to the emotions. So because Jasper's gift is emotional and not mental, it is able to affect Bella.
Why couldn't Alice see Bella's future when she was pregnant?
During Breaking Dawn, Alice's visions of Bella's future are completely blocked due to her pregnancy with Renesmee. She explains to Jacob that it gives her a headache to try and see, and since she cannot see at all with him around, her headache gets lessened.

Charlie is unable to bring himself to reveal his identity to Matt because he knows that he is no longer the Charlie Matt once knew. Just as the bakery workers are not proud of Charlie's new intellect, Charlie fears that Matt will have no reason to feel anything but threatened by his genius son.
(at around 1h 5 mins) In the scene where Bella goes to the Cullens house for the first time, when Nikki Reed's character had to break the bowl, she actually cut her hands. This is why she is wearing gloves for the scene in the film.
By imprinting on Renesmee, Jacob has imbued her with protection from other werewolves in his tribe. Jacob explained to Bella that he was never actually attracted to her but to the baby, Renesmee, developing in Bella's womb, an explanation that has troubled people ever since.
