He was accused of betraying his best friend, James Potter, and his wife, Lily Evans, to the Dark Lord Volvemort. He was blamed for the deaths of Peter Pettigrew and a bunch of muggles. He was said to be the right-hand man of Voldemort.
He was framed. Most of everyone in the wizarding world believed that he had murdered people. Peter Pettigrew had become the secret keeper for James and Lily when they had found out Voldemort was looking for them.

Did Dumbledore know Sirius was innocent?
Dumbledore's lack of belief that Sirius is innocent is also suspect. Sirius was a member of the Order of the Phoenix which fought against Death Eaters, but Sirius also was as close to James as a brother, the Potters even took him in when he ran away from home.
Sirius Black proved he did not care about Remus. So of course, he would suspect him to be the traitor. Now, why would Remus Lupin suspect Sirius Black to be the traitor? Because he had already betrayed him once before.
Sirius also disliked Regulus because of his ambition to become a Death Eater, but he was unaware that Regulus later attempted to destroy one of Voldemort's Horcruxes. Sirius regretted how young his brother died and wished Regulus hadn't been as soft to go with what their parents told him to do.
Fundamentally, he was a good person. He fought for what was right and was unafraid to stand against Voldemort. He joined the Order of the Phoenix not once, but twice. Despite being a pure-blood, he didn't believe that he was superior to other witches, wizards and Muggles.
Sirius's early life proved unhappy; he had come to hate most of his relatives, in particular his mother. He rejected his family's pure-blood elitism and reverence for the Dark Arts.
Not proven innocent, but after his death, the Ministry did realize that Sirius was in fact innocent, and he was posthumously cleared of all charges. However, in life, Sirius was a wanted man from the moment he escaped Azkaban until the time of his death.

When questioned by Bellatrix about his loyalties, Snape says he has been working for Voldemort ever since Voldemort's return, and explains his actions in the previous books in that light. He points out that gaining Dumbledore's trust and protection has kept him out of Azkaban and free to operate on Voldemort's behalf.

Draco, who implies that he is aware of how Sirius Black was supposedly involved in the deaths of Harry's parents, also taunts Harry about the impending threat of Black: "If it was me, I'd want revenge. I'd hunt him down myself."
When Voldemort fell, Pettigrew faked his own murder, framing Sirius, then went into hiding, disguised as the Weasley family's pet rat, Scabbers. When the truth is revealed, proving Sirius' innocence, he assumes a surrogate-father role to Harry.
