Why does Jack hate Ralph? From the beginning, Jack, who is the head choir boy back home, thinks he should be the chief, but the other boys choose Ralph. The tension between Ralph and Jack grows because Jack has different priorities—to hunt and have fun—than Ralph, who wants to hold onto civilization and get rescued.
Ralph angers Jack by telling Piggy that even Jack would hide if the beast attacked them. In retaliation, Jack attempts his most serious mutiny yet, trying to convince the other boys to impeach Ralph. When the boys refuse to openly vote against Ralph, Jack announces his defection and runs off into the forest.
However Ralph and jack have different notions as Ralph is more sensible he sets his mind on everyone surviving and then getting rescued. He constructs shelters and manages to keep a fire going. Ralph is thinking and caring for everyone. Nevertheless jack is single minded in his pursuit of the pigs.
By the end of the story, Jack is so obsessed with power and his hate for Ralph that he would do anything to get rid of him, including hunting him like an animal and killing him. Jack burns down the jungle in an attempt to flush Ralph out, which, ironically, catches the attention of a passing ship and gets them rescued.

Ralph is furious with Jack, because it was the hunters' responsibility to see that the fire was maintained. Jack and the hunters return from the jungle, covered with blood and chanting a bizarre song. They carry a dead pig on a stake between them.
When Ralph is elected leader Jack is far from happy and spends the rest of the novel trying to win back the power he has lost. To do so he has to form a separate group and then rules them with terror and fear. In the end Jack is a vicious dictator.
Ironically, Ralph's main motivation throughout the entire novel has been maintaining a smoke signal, yet Jack's careless and murderous wildfire incites their rescue from the island. Soon the rest of the boys join Ralph and tell the officer about their ordeal.

More specifically, when Ralph is chosen as chief, Jack's jealous nature is seen as his face shows a blush of mortification. In addition, Ralph and Jack are connected through a love/hate relationship that neither one of them understands, a link Ralph thinks of as "an indefinable connection" in Chapter 12.
At the end of Lord of the Flies, most of the boys survive. A littlun goes missing after the group builds a fire that gets out of control, and can be assumed to be dead. Simon gets killed by the group after they mistake him for the beast. Finally, Piggy dies when one of the boys in Jack's tribe throws a boulder on him.
