Why did Katniss not shoot Gale when he was captured? In Mockingjay, Katniss defied Gale's wishes when he was captured because she didn't want to see him dead. It seems like a nice thing for her to do, especially since Gale is soon able to escape out of the Peacekeepers' grasp because of the rebellion's "distraction".
Katniss's focus on survival and her family's safety prevented her from fully considering romance, but her feelings for Peeta and Gale diverged in the end. Katniss ultimately chose Peeta because he understood her trauma and she didn't want to lose him, proving her love for him.
The problem was that Gale was the one who created the firebomb devices. Despite not being fully responsible, Katniss couldn't overlook his possible involvement. Katniss returned to District 12, where she reunited with Peeta after she couldn't allow herself to fully forgive her childhood best friend.
Prim was among the medics who arrived to treat the victims. Unfortunately, a second batch of bombs were set off, with Prim being killed in the explosions. Gale was not the one to drop the bombs from the hovercraft, but he was one of the key figures to devise the strategy of double bombings.
Hunger Games: Why Katniss Ends Up With Peeta, Not Gale
Who killed Prim Hunger?
Before the Capitol battle, Gale had explained to Katniss his series of bombs designed to feed off human compassion: a small bomb would go off, and then when medical aid rushed in, a second bomb would go off, killing those people as well. Incidentally, it's this exact type of bomb that took Prim's life.
Prim's death was necessary for Katniss to see the true evil of Coin. This also allowed Katniss to hate Coin on a higher level and have a motive to kill her. Finnick's death was also necessary because he protected Katniss and the others of the Star Squad during the lizard mutt attack.
On the other hand, while Gale also wants to create a better world, he tends to be more violent. Gale is resentful and believes the ends justify the means. While Gale's strength was necessary to win the war against the Capitol, Peeta's peaceful personality is ultimately what Katniss needed in a person.
At the end of Mockingjay, Gale relocates to District 2 and begins working in the district's government. He helps train replacements for the Capitol's Peacekeepers.
Gale's jealousy towards Peeta stemmed from his feelings for Katniss and his desire to be with her. Even after Katniss became engaged to Peeta, Gale still harbored feelings for her and was unable to fully let go of his jealousy and resentment towards Peeta.
When Katniss comes home to District 12, Gale immediately confesses his love for Katniss, and she realizes she might have feelings for him, too — but she can't explore them, because she has to continue her fake relationship with Peeta or else her entire family, including “cousin Gale,” will be killed.
He Didn't Save Peeta's Family But some people believe Gale may have had more malicious reasons for not helping them. However, Peeta's family wasn't great. His parents were abusive, or at least distant. It would have been interesting to see what would have happened had his family survived, but no one missed them much.
Peeta, Annie, and Beetee vote no, while Johanna and Enobaria vote yes. After some thought, Katniss demands to kill Snow. Once she receives an agreement, she votes yes, for Prim. Realizing something is up (as Katniss would never do that), Haymitch votes yes, too.
Gale does not marry anyone in The Hunger Games. He and Katniss talk about running away together and starting a new life in the wilderness, but they never officially marry.
According to the star behind Effie, Elizabeth Banks, she and Haymitch's Woody Harrelson improvised the scene. Considering she's been adamant about the characters having some romantic connection, it only makes sense that they'd share a goodbye kiss. It's very on-brand for Effie, as well.
Who does Gale end up with at the end of Mockingjay?
In the Mockingjay movie, Katniss confronts Gale about his role in Prim's death, which he struggles to come to terms with. Katniss, unable to look at him the same way, lets him walk away without a word and eventually ended up living with Peeta.
Peeta decides, though, that he will go out on his own to act as a diversion in case Katniss and the others need it. Gale gives Peeta his nightlock pill in case Peeta's captured. They leave early in the morning, bundled up and styled by Tigris. Cressida and Pollux go first, leading the way to the City Circle.
His father pointed her out and told Peeta he had wanted to marry Katniss's mother, but she ran off with a coal miner who sang so well even the birds would stop and listen.
His feelings and memories are distorted with hallucinogenic tracker jacker venom, in a mind-control technique known as "Hijacking." The Capitol uses this method to turn Peeta against Katniss, making him believe that she is not only responsible for the death of his family, friends and the destruction of District 12, but ...
Why so evil, Peeta? Well, as we learn at the beginning of Mockingjay (spoilers, obv), he's been brainwashed by a method called “hijacking,” in which Tracker Jacker venom is injected to create hallucinations. In this particular case, he's been brainwashed to hate Katniss.
Finnick's death gave even more weight to Katniss's mission to kill Snow, since he was directly responsible for the death of one of her friends - making it all the more poignant when she chooses to kill President Coin (Julianne Moore) instead of getting to personally kill Snow herself.
Even though it was a risky move (cause who knows if it work out) Coin knew Katniss well. And by killing Prim, and making it seem like the Capital's fault, she was hoping to get Katniss' support in becoming the next leader.
Cressida is a talented director with a keen eye for useful footage. Her desire to film Katniss in action is so great that she lies about Katniss's plan to kill Coriolanus Snow in the hopes that Katniss will act heroically on camera.
