Quirrell knew he wanted a dragon egg and used it to manipulate Hagrid into telling him how to get around Fluffy. Hagrid then went to the Hogwarts library to borrow books on caring for a dragon. Harry Potter, Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger found the section he was browsing and deduced why.
This “stranger” was Quirinius Quirrell, who again, says so himself later. He used the egg, and getting Hagrid drunk, to coax him into explaining how to get past Fluffy, Hagrid's three-headed dog.

Professor Quirrell was too gullible and succumbed to Voldemort's manipulation, becoming his human host. Voldemort latched onto Quirrell's body, his face appearing on the back of the professor's head, and he used him to search for the Philosopher's Stone and infiltrate Hogwarts during Harry Potter's first school year.
As Headmaster Albus Dumbledore was a highly intelligent and powerful wizard, he was aware of Quirrell's true nature even though he maintained a relatively civil relationship with him. This was further evidenced by the fact he asked Snape to keep an eye on Quirrell.
Quirinus Quirrell served as a temporary Horcrux when Voldemort's soul possessed his body in 1991. However, the piece of the soul survived Quirrell's demise, and was destroyed six years later when Voldemort was killed.

Dumbledore knew that Quirrell was possessed by Voldemort and purposely set things up for him to reach the Philosopher's Stone. So we know that Dumbledore figured that Lord Voldemort would come back someday. Dumbledore also knew that the Defense Against the Dark Arts teaching post was cursed.
At the beginning of the Battle of Hogwarts, the Death Eaters invaded the home of the Acromantula and drove them to attack the school. When the spiders attacked, Hagrid ran forwards to protect them. Acromantula are horribly strong, so it is likely that they captured him and took him to Lord Voldemort.
As dragon breeding was outlawed by the Warlocks' Convention of 1709, Hagrid could not legally keep Norbert, and had the dragon taken away by Charlie Weasley and his colleagues to the Romanian Dragon Sanctuary.

In “The Deathly Hallows,” Hagrid is supposedly brought to Voldemort's headquarters directly by deadly acromantulas. As a member of the Order, Hagrid would be tortured by Voldemort for information under reasonable circumstances. At the very least, he would face attack and insults from the rest of the Death Eaters.

At the beginning of the first book, Gringotts Vault 713, a higher-security vault, held a small grubby bag, which we later learn contains the Philosopher's Stone. Albus Dumbledore sends Hagrid to retrieve it while he escorts Harry to Diagon Alley.
It was only towards the end of the first installment of Harry Potter that he was revealed as an antagonist — and possibly even a Horcrux. With Voldemort protruding from the back of his head, Quirrell was a temporary Horcrux — and, hence, not as inconsequential as he seemed.

With the return of his Death Eaters at the end of Book Four, Voldemort declared that Snape had left their ranks forever. Conversely, Dumbledore went on declaring his undying trust in Snape. So Dumbledore was no more wrong than was Voldemort.
Notably, Voldemort appeared to be entirely unaware of this split, as he later created a seventh Horcrux in his quest to have six, and continued to target Harry Potter despite him now holding part of Voldemort's own soul.

The prevailing theory has been that Voldemort gradually lost his nose (and humanity) throughout his life due to his exclusive use of Dark Magic. The more Dark Magic he tapped into, the less human he became both figuratively and literally. This was only amplified as he split his soul to create the Horcruxes.
