The leaves of an unnamed plant are used several times to heal various wounds and ailments: in one instance, Rue chews the leaves, then applies the pulpy salve to Katniss's tracker jacker wounds; in another, Katniss's mother boils the leaves to make a medicinal elixir; finally, Katniss uses the leaves to treat Peeta's ...
Rue, like Prim, makes Katniss promise that she will win, and there are moments when it is her promise to Rue, more so than her promise to Prim, that gives Katniss the strength she needs to fight on. She wants to make sure that Rue's death will not go unremembered.
Katniss looks up and sees that Rue is pointing to a wasp's nest higher up. Katniss thinks it is probably a tracker jacker nest. Trackers jackers are another mutation created by the Capitol during the war with the districts.
During The Hunger Games: Catching Fire, the three-fingered salute is still used as a gesture of goodbye, but also comes to represent the anger and grief people feel toward the Capitol at taking their children to be killed.
Peeta used the dyes to paint a picture of Rue after Katniss covered her with flowers when she died. He says he wants to hold them accountable for killing Rue, and Effie tells him that that kind of thinking is forbidden. Katniss then tells the team she hung a dummy of Seneca Crane.

Did Rue's dad start the riot?
Katniss never hallucinates about her dad's death after being stung by tracker jackers. Rue's dad doesn't start a riot in District 11 after his daughter's death. Haymitch doesn't convince the Game Maker to change the solo victor rule.
Rue reminds Katniss very much of her sister, Prim. Katniss acts as the primary protector of Rue once the two become allies. In this sense, she continues the role that she formerly played with her sister, Prim. Katniss and Rue share food, supplies, and stories about their lives.
Katniss describes her as having a face "as fresh as a raindrop, as lovely as the primrose for which she was named." When she wore clothing, from her reaping outfit to her medic uniform, Prim continuously had a "duck tail," one that earned her "little duck" as a nickname.
Rue formed an alliance with Katniss Everdeen after warning her about a nest of tracker jackers. Rue decided to trust Katniss partly because of the pin she wore over her heart: the famous mockingjay pin. Katniss avenged Rue when Marvel killed her.
Could Rue have potentially survived the Games, had she not made an alliance with Katniss? Shadows n Secrecy Rue could survive perfectly fine on the fruits found around the arena since she's got good plant knowledge.
Rue explains that the mockingjays at home would carry messages for her, that they were her "special friends," and, in many ways, Katniss' mockingjay pin carries a special message with it. For instance, the pin signals to Rue that she can trust Katniss.
Why does Katniss break glimmers fingers with a rock?
Admittedly, this aspect could very well be Katniss' hallucinogenic tracker jacker stings working against her, but she does have to break Glimmer's fingers to retrieve the bow the other tribute was carrying, adding to the scene's grimness.
Why does Katniss scream Peeta's name at the end of Chapter 18?
Under the new rule, tributes from the same district will both be declared winners if they are the last two left alive. Katniss, realizing that she and Peeta can both survive, immediately calls out Peeta's name.
Katniss is ready to take action against the Capitol and the Careers, and she wants to avenge Rue's death. Her promise to Rue gives her the drive to win, even more so than her promise to Prim. It is also Rue's death that makes Katniss want to shame the Capitol.
Sadly, however, Katniss began to see Gale as a representation of war and anger as most of Panem's 13 Districts embarked on the Second Rebellion. What started as an admirable attribute quickly ended up driving a wedge between the former allies once Primrose met her death.
Katniss's focus on survival and her family's safety prevented her from fully considering romance, but her feelings for Peeta and Gale diverged in the end. Katniss ultimately chose Peeta because he understood her trauma and she didn't want to lose him, proving her love for him.
In the course of the first book, The Hunger Games, Katniss competes in the Hunger Games after she is allowed to volunteer in place of her little sister, Primrose "Prim" Everdeen. While in the arena, Katniss forms an alliance with Rue, the young female tribute from District 11, as she reminds Katniss of her sister.
Katniss here's this and understands that even though she may not love Peeta (then) that it's one less person who has to die. (At least that's what I have always thought.) Katniss realizes that if she pretends to be in love with Peeta people will want the capitol to let them survive.
Gale was responsible for creating weapons that would trigger a second wave of bombs to target first responders and combat healers. This invention potentially ended up killing Prim, but even if he wasn't directly responsible, Katniss found this tactic so abhorrent that she lost her affection for him.
Peeta painted Rue's picture to hold the Gamemakers responsible for her death. Seneca Crane was the previous Head Gamemaker, who was executed for allowing two victors. Katniss painted his name on a dummy and hanged it to warn them that they're not safe and the same thing could easily happen to them.
Why are citizens not allowed to eat the crops in District 11?
District 11 also seems to be one of the poorer districts; the citizens are not allowed to eat any of the crops- presumably because nearly everything is reserved for the Capitol- and Katniss Everdeen describes the local housing as poor, even compared to the Seam in District 12.
Katniss has a conflicted relationship with her mother. Following her father's death, her mother fell into deep depression and now rarely speaks. As a result, Katniss has a difficult time feeling love and affection for her mother, even as she recognizes that her mother is a kind and intelligent woman.
